One of the key features at Randwick this weekend for George Main Stakes Day is the Tea Rose Stakes 2015 for three-year-old fillies, betting tips for the Flight Stakes lead-up found below.
There are 14 hopefuls in the field for the $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the set weights clash set to run as Randwick Race 5 at 3:05pm (AEST).
Leading the latest Tea Rose Stakes betting markets in a really tight affair is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kimberley Star ($5) who has eased out in the markets after drawing wide in barrier 10 for jockey Blake Shinn to overcome.
A winner of three on the trot earlier this campaign, the in-form daughter of Star Witness ran second to stablemate Speak Fondly in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) two back before returning to Randwick on September 5 for a third when only beaten half a length in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m).
She is followed then by three $5.50 second picks in the Tea Rose Stakes odds with the John O’Shea-trained Furious Stakes third placed Exceed And Excel filly Ottoman, market mover Perignon who ran second in the Furious for Gerald Ryan and Waterhouse’s last start Warwick Farm winner in the wet Flamboyant Lass all battling to make an impact in the markets.
So will the first four in betting run the first four or will there be an upset Tea Rose Stakes result this season from the likes of the third Tulloch Lodge representative Sempre Libera ($8) or even Godolphin’s lightly-raced up-and-comer Pearls ($16)?
#1 Ottoman ($5.50)
Drawn midfield in barrier seven with James McDonald to ride, this nicely-bred dual winner has Group 3 winning form over 1200m at Randwick in the wet from the autumn. She’s Group 1 performed, handles a rain-affected track and will strip fitter second-up here after a solid third first-up in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) which is the traditional lead-up. Her runs to date have all suggested she’ll like a bit more ground so she should be ready to relish a step up to 1400m here on the back of a good resuming run she can only improve off having won the Group 3 at the end of last prep.
#7 Flamboyant Lass ($5.50)
Waterhouse has three in the mix including the favourite but a possible wet track on Saturday brings this in-form daughter of Stratum into the picture. She won first-up at Warwick Farm on a Heavy track over 1000m, and while she hasn’t won over more than that distance, Waterhouse is a master and must think the 1400m is going to suit. She was disappointing in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes as a juvenile and is drawn wide (11) on the weekend, but her return at Canterbury was against older horses and was ultra-impressive. She’ll go up to the lead and could be the one they have too much trouble catching.
#5 Fireworks ($41)
Ryan’s other runner is at the super juicy odds as one of the genuine outsiders in this market, but with Kerrin McEvoy aboard from the rails run think she is way over. A nicely-bred daughter of Snitzel, She has Group 3 winning form in Sydney from the start of the year and has run fifth in her two lead-up runs at Randwick (Silver Shadow / Furious). She was beaten over six lengths both times from good barriers, but the extra distance should work in her favour and she’ll get the soft run from the alley as she finally gets up to the metres she’s been craving.
