2015 Newcastle Cup Betting Tips & Selections

A smart line-up of Sydney Spring Racing Carnival-bound stayers are engaged to face off in Newcastle Race 7 at 4:40pm (AEST) when this year’s $175,000 Group 3 XXXX Gold Newcastle Cup (2300m) takes place.

Leading the current Newcastle Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at a firming $4.20 is Astronomos.

After opening as long as $11 for the win, the David Vandyke-trained New Approach stallion has been smashed by the punters following a Randwick win over 2000m last time out and a good barrier three draw.

He carried 57.5kg last time out and drops down to the 54kg minimum this afternoon making him a standout for the bookies.

The other single figure chances in the Newcastle Cup odds are Gai Waterhouse’s former Sydney Cup winning top weight The Offer ($5) carrying 60kg from barrier one with Tommy Berry in the saddle, the in-form John Thompson-trained import Orbec ($5) and Chris Waller’s last start Wyong Cup winner Beyond Thankful ($7).

So will the best fancied in betting also be first past the post in the Newcastle Gold Cup results or is there an upset on the cards from a longer priced hopeful such as Waterhouse’s other runner Zee Zeely ($14) or the local Paul Perry-trained Taree Cup winner Ghost Protocol ($14)?

1st

#5 Orbec ($5)

Plenty of boxes ticked by Thompson’s Le Harve stallion who has had just the two runs down under. The French import has run top three in both of those against some quality stayers up around this class when second to fellow Newcastle Cup hope Beyond Thankful in the Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m) at Rosehill and then third, beaten only half a length, to the same Waller-trained galloper in the black-type Wyong Cup over 2080m. Has winning form in Europe over 2450m and so the distance this afternoon and the soft track conditions are set to suit. Gets in very well on 54kg as well after carrying 55.5kg last time out so will be hard to hold out here to break his maiden status in Australia.

2nd

#2 Beyond Thankful ($7)

Beyond Thankful has a big 58kg weight and wide gate 10 draw to overcome, but he’s got the ability and time to do so. Waller’s Whipper six-year-old is all class as proven by his string of lovely recent Sydney runs. He has won three of his past four starts including the Listed Wyong Cup (2080m) at the start of the month with the same weight and a wider draw (13 of 13). Hugh Bowman stays on so that’s another plus for his first run at Newcastle. He is yet to get out over this distance but his impressive lead-up suggests the extra metres will be a non-issue this afternoon and he is racing far too good to rule out.

3rd

#9 Just As Cosmic ($21)

If you rate the form coming out of the Wyong Cup then Jason Coyle’s runner-up Just As Cosmic is way over the odds for her Newcastle assignment. The six-year-old mare has finished second behind two fellow Newcastle Cup runners at her two latest starts when beaten under a length in both the Taree and Wyong Cups. She only has winning form up to a mile (1600m) however so the step up in distance here will be the test. Still, if she handles that she could surprise from barrier six with Winona Costin taking over for Berry in the saddle.
