Last year’s winning trainer Chris Waller has three stablemates accepted in the 2015 George Main Stakes field for Saturday at Royal Randwick including the best two in betting for the mile feature.
Set to run as Randwick Race 6 at 3:45pm (AEST), this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Colgate Optic White George Main Stakes (1600m) has attracted a final field of 10 milers.
Leading the early George Main Stakes betting is Waller’s Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec who is drawn midfield in barrier five with Glyn Schofield to ride.
Waller has won two of the past three editions of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival clash with Shoot Out (2012) and Sacred Falls (2014).
Barrier five last produced a winner in More Joyous (2010) while Schofield will shoot for his first win since saluting on Road To Rock (2009).
Kermadec will be third-up on Saturday after a first-up fifth to stablemate Royal Descent in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) before finishing one ahead of her when they crossed second and third behind Complacent in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) on September 5.
Run over the same track and distance as the George Main Stakes, the Chelmsford Stakes has produced just the one winner of the Group 1 in the past decade with Sacred Falls backing up from a fourth last year.
Waller’s other best chance at a third George Main Stakes trophy, Redoute’s Choice mare Royal Descent has drawn wider in barrier seven with Hugh Bowman retaining the ride on the flying six-year-old.
Streama (2013) was the most recent George Main Stakes winning mare while Bowman guided Shoot Out to victory for the Waller stable two years ago.
Royal Descent has had seven previous runs over the 1600m at Randwick for an imposing record of five seconds and two thirds, and is second favourite in the markets to win her first at the track and distance.
Waller’s third hope in the mix is then outside hope Moriarty with the rails run from barrier one with veteran hoop Jim Cassidy aboard the Clodovil eight-year-old who ran a disappointing 14th in the Chelmsford Stakes last time out.
Along with Royal Descent another top-rated mare in the mix is the Kris Lees-trained dual Group 1 winner Lucia Valentina drawn a treat in barrier three with Brenton Avdulla booked for the ride.
She hasn’t won since taking out last October’s Toorak Handicap at Flemington and comes off a sixth to Hooked in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) from the start of the month, a race that last produced a George Main winner in Sincero (2011) who completed the double.
Tramway Stakes winner this spring Hooked is also accepted for a George Main Stakes rematch, Tye Angland to ride the John Thompson-trained Casino Prince stallion from barrier six.
The other best fancied hope in the line-up is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vespone five-year-old Pornichet, winner of the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) during the winter in Brisbane, who ran second in the Warwick Stakes before a Chelmsford sixth last time out with Blake Shinn aboard who retains the ride this weekend.
