Our Ivanhowe Tops 2015 Naturalism Stakes Field & Weights

Lee & Anthony Freedman’s Melbourne Cup-bound German import Our Ivanhowe will carry the top weight in a capacity Naturalism Stakes 2015 field at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend in Melbourne.

Running as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:45pm (AEST), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Bendigo Bank East Malvern MRC Foundation Cup (2000m) is formerly known as the Naturalism Stakes and offers a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption to the winner.

Leading the field and weights with 60kg with Ben Melham booked for the ride is the Team Freedman-trained Soldier Hollow stallion who also has a wide barrier 16 draw to deal with in the full 16-starter, 4-emergency field.

The Spring Cups hope has had just one run down under finishing midfield in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) in Adelaide back in May but won a Cranbourne trial impressively by six lengths over 1550m last Friday on way to his Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival return on the weekend.

The next heaviest-weighted Naturalism Stakes hopefuls this year are the Jamie Edwards-trained Sertorius (57.5kg) and Darren Weir’s Taiyoo (57kg) drawn in barriers nine and one respectively.

Winner of the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at the same track and distance back in early April, Galileo eight-year-old Sertorius was last seen running 10th when beaten under three lengths in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) late last month carrying 59kg.

Adelaide Cup runner-up over the two miles in March Taiyoo had a much heavier 61kg on his back when crossing eighth over 1700m at Flemington just last weekend, the Haradasun six-year-old on the short back-up chasing his first win since February.

Coming off better lead-up runs are the likes of the Ciaron Maher-trained Kapour with the outside alley who is also accepted for the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) over the same distance in Sydney on George Main Stakes Day this weekend and Magnapal.

Toylsome six-year-old Kapour ran second in the Grafton Cup in July on the back of a Listed Winter Cup (2400m) win at Rosehill and returned to racing on August 29 when third to Magic Hurricane in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m).

The in-form Magnapal meanwhile shoots for three straight wins on Saturday from gate seven with Luke Currie in the saddle, the Magnus six-year-old having won at Sandown-Hillside on August 12 before his tidy victory in the Listed Heatherlie Handicap (1700m) on Memsie Stakes Day.

Other notable Naturalism Stakes chances in this year’s line-up include Chris Waller’s former Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur (56.5kg) and the Team Hawkes-trained Redoute’s Choice mare La Amistad who won the Listed Ramsden Stakes (3200m) over the two miles at Flemington back in May.
