John O’Shea’s last start Premier’s Cup winner Magic Hurricane is being kept safe in betting by the bookmakers for the Newcastle Gold Cup 2015 on Friday despite the horse also accepted for a Randwick run on Saturday.
Godolphin’s Hurricane Run six-year-old is one of a full 16 final acceptors for this year’s $175,000 Group 3 XXXX Gold Newcastle Cup (2300m), the gelding leading the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.70 for the win.
He has a wide barrier 14 draw for veteran hoop Jim Cassidy to overcome but gets in well with the weights allocated the 54kg minimum.
That’s the same weight he carried to victory when defeated Silverball in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill late last month.
Connections will make a late call on whether Magic Hurricane runs in the Newcastle Cup as the favourite on Friday however as he has also gained a run in Saturday’s $200,000 Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) as the second emergency for the George Main Stakes Day race after two early scratchings.
In the Newcastle Gold Cup betting markets there are four other single figure chances for the win with The Offer ($6) the next best fancied despite a 60kg top weight and unplaced run last time out from the Gai Waterhouse-trained stayer.
Drawn the rails in barrier one with Tommy Berry booked to ride the Montjeu seven-year-old, The Offer won last year’s Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) and didn’t win again until a first-up effort at Hawkesbury last month in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m).
He failed to go back-to-back last time out however when stepped up in distance for the Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2080m) where he was still brave in defeat having carted a hefty 62kg to a close fifth when beaten under a length.
Equal $6.50 third picks are then Chris Waller’s Wyong Gold Cup winner Beyond Thankful and Orbec in gate eight for jockey Tye Angland.
Whipper six-year-old Beyond Thankful is allocated 58kg for Friday having had the same kilos on his back last start to win at Wyong giving him three victories from his past four starts.
He did it that day from barrier 13 of 13 with Hugh Bowman in the saddle and is wide again (10) with Bowman retaining the ride at Newcastle.
John Thompson’s Le Harve stallion Orbec is in top form this time in with a first-up second to Beyond Thankful in the Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m) in mid-August in his Australian debut before a third in the Wyong Cup beaten just over half a length carrying 55.5kg – 1.5kg more than he gets for the Newcastle rematch.
Rounding out the hopes under $10 for the win is then the market mover Astronomos who has been well supported early backed in from $11 to $8 after a gun barrier three draw for the David Vandyke-trained New Approach stallion.
The five-year-old comes off a 2000m win at Randwick and has won his only other start at Newcastle back in November last year.
Other notable hopes at more generous odds for an upset Newcastle Gold Cup result include Paul Perry’s local hope Ghost Protocol ($15) who won the Taree Cup two back before a close fourth in the Wyong Cup, the widely-drawn Brisbane visitor Jetset Lad ($17) who won Doomben’s Listed Tattersall’s Mile two starts back as well as the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m) during the winter, Just As Cosmic ($17) coming off seconds in both the Taree and Wyong Cups, and Waterhouse’s other runner Zee Zeely ($17).
