2015 The Shorts Field Features Shiraz

Tony McEvoy’s flying sprinter Shiraz is among the final acceptances for The Shorts 2015 in Sydney on Saturday where the six-year-old will shoot for his fifth win on the trot.

A key support race on the George Main Stakes Day program, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 The Bowermans Office Furniture Shorts (1100m) jumps as Randwick Race 4 at 2:30pm (AEST) and has attracted a final field of nine.

Drawn ideally in barrier four with Kerrin McEvoy booked for the ride is McEvoy’s Hawkesbury-based Zarzi gelding Shiraz who hasn’t been defeated in his four runs going back to early July.

His past two have been in Group company firstly at Flemington in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) and then on September 5 at Saturday’s track when defeating Craftiness in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m).

He boasts an outstanding record over the 1100m with five wins and two seconds from eight previous runs over the distance of Saturday’s clash and looks a big hope in a small field.

Also coming off a nice lead-up run into The Shorts this year is the Joe Pride-trained Ball Of Muscle who is drawn one inside of Shiraz with barrier three.

Dubawi five-year-old Ball Of Muscle has had 14 starts to date for an impressive eight wins, four seconds and two thirds.

He is undefeated over The Shorts’ distance and was last seen in the winner’s stall in Brisbane on May 30 taking out the Group 2 QTC Cup (1200m).

First-up this time in the ultra-consistent gelding ran third in the Concorde Stakes behind Shiraz who he will be out to turn the tables on this weekend in the rematch.

Pride also prepares the defending The Shorts winner Terravista, the superstar sprinter drawn in barrier six with regular rider Hugh Bowman booked for the first-up run.

Captain Rio six-year-old Terravista tracks towards two Group 1 majors in Melbourne this campaign including the $1 million Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) down the Flemington straight in November that he won last year.

His first-up record is very good with four wins and a third from five previous resuming runs and Pride’s confidence in his horse to go back-to-back is high so long as the rain stays away in Sydney for Saturday’s meeting.

Also resuming in The Shorts are the likes of the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Group 1 BTC Cup winner from May Hot Snitzel who was last seen running fifth in Brisbane’s Stradbroke Handicap on June 6, stablemate That’s A Good Idea who ran second to Ball Of Muscle in the QTC Cup in his latest run and Chris Waller’s Shamardal four-year-old Delectation who ran second in last year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes.
