A lead-up to later Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival features including the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, this year’s How Now is registered as the $150,000 Group 3 William Hill Sprint Series Heat 2 Stakes (1200m).

There are a bumper 24 early entries for the set weights plus penalties sprint for the older mares, including Flying Spur six-year-old Hazard who comes off a first-up second in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at the same track and distance from August 29.

Before that during the winter she won three on the trot including the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) at Doomben before a midfield finish in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at the Gold Coast.

She has a solid Caulfield record heading into Saturday of three wins and two seconds from nine previous runs at the track and is joined in the entries by her four-year-old stablemate Matilija.

The other highest rated mares in the mix are the David Brideoake-trained Griante and Miss Promiscuity for David Hayes & Tom Dabernig.

Griante, third to Lucky Hussler in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley back in late March, improved on two failed ninths including in the Cockram Stakes before a third to Fell Swoop in a Listed Moonee Valley race on September 5.

Miss Promiscuity comes via a different lead-up, the Magnus mare having won Caulfield’s Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) back in early July before a brave third to Bounding in the Group 3 The Heath 1100 (1100m) late last month.

Hayes & Dabernig have a total of three nominations with Miss Promiscuity joined by stablemates Girl Guide and Wawail.

Churchill Downs six-year-old Girl Guide defends her How Now Stakes title if accepted having won the race last spring narrowly, but hasn’t won again since.

Her return was an eighth in the Cockram, still only beaten under two lengths in the traditional How Now Stakes lead-up.

Wawail is a four-year-old daughter of Lonhro who won the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in mid-March and who hasn’t raced since a ninth in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide in early May when beaten two and a half lengths by the winner Miracles Of Life.

Other notable first-up hopes include Group 2 Queen Of The South winner on Robert Sangster Day Atlantic Dream, Robert Sangster fourth placed grey Miss Steele and local Sebring four-year-old Tahini Dancer.

Boasting a fitness edge and coming off nice lead-up runs meanwhile are the likes of Lesley’s Choice who won back-to-back Doomben races in August and Cockram Stakes third placegetter Vezalay who ran sixth when beaten only three quarters of a length last weekend in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.
