There are a bumper 19 early entries for this year’s $175,000 Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) including the defending champion Disclaimer.

Last Sydney Spring Racing Carnival Peter & Paul Snowden’s Dansili gelding enjoyed a strong one and three-quarter length victory in the Newcastle Gold Cup as a 10/1 shot before running a brave fourth to Opinion in the The Metropolitan at Royal Randwick.

He has failed to finish in the money since last October however and will need to improve notably on a last start 10th in the Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2080m) from September 4 if he is to go back-to-back in the Newcastle Gold Cup.

Disclaimer carried 54kg to victory in last year’s race and is allocated the same minimum weight for the title defence on Friday.

Leading the Newcastle Gold Cup weights with 60kg is the Gai Waterhouse-trained The Offer, winner of the 2014 Sydney Cup over two miles.

Imported Montjeu gelding The Offer impressed first-up this season with a Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) win at Hawkesbury before crossing under a length away fifth in a blanket finish in this year’s Wyong Cup.

Along with The Offer, Waterhouse has also nominated for Zee Zeely who has had just the two runs down under both at Canterbury including a nose second to Maurus in a Benchmark 75 over 1900m at the start of the month.

Chris Waller’s Wyong Gold Cup winning Whipper six-year-old Beyond Thankful is also nominated for a Newcastle Gold Cup rematch this week.

A winner of three of his past four starts going back to late July, the smart galloper carried 58kg from barrier 13 of 13 for his half-length Wyong win and is high up in the weights with the same allocation for Friday.

After The Offer and Beyond Thankful the only other two Newcastle Gold Cup nominees weighted above the minimum this spring are the Brian Smith-trained Jetset Lad (57kg) and John Thompson’s Tremec (54.5kg).

Elusive City eight-year-old Jetset Lad hails from Brisbane and won the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m) back in June during a strong Winter Carnival campaign.

The veteran Queenslander’s past two runs have both also been back at Doomben with a Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1640m) win in July and a last start sixth when a big weight got the better of him over the same distance on August 22.

Zabeel seven-year-old Tremec meanwhile is second-up and looking to atone for a dead last when 16th and beaten over 10 lengths in a disappointing return behind Complacent in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) on September 5.

Sitting number one on the Newcastle Gold Cup ballot meanwhile is the Kris Lees-trained Glorious Sinndar allocated 54kg, the European import having had two runs at the track for one win and a third when carrying 59kg and 59.5kg respectively in his opening two runs in Australia.

Also coming off a win are the in-form New Approach stallion Astronomos who has won three from four in non black-type company this campaign and the John O’Shea-trained Magic Hurricane.

Magic Hurricane won the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill at the end of August and is nominated for all the spring majors including $750,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) over the mile and a half on October 3.

He sits as the $9 favourite in the latest The Metropolitan odds at Ladbrokes.com.au and if he runs in the Newcastle Gold Cup over the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on Saturday, for which he is also nominated, he will be running in a race that has produced two of the past four Metrop champions.
