A host of 2015 Caulfield Cup-nominated stayers are also entered for the Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend vying for the ballot exemption on offer to winner of the lead-up race.
There are two Group races on the Caulfield line-up in Melbourne on Saturday including the Naturalism Stakes, registered this spring as the $150,000 Bendigo Bank East Malvern MRC Foundation Cup (2000m).
Among the bumper 30 early entries taken for the quality handicap are a number of chances eyeing a run back at the track on October 17 in the $3 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m).
Currently the shortest priced of the Naturalism Stakes nominees in futures Caulfield Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is The United States ($26).
The Robert Hickmott-trained Lloyd Williams’ galloper has won four of his nine starts to date and is only very lightly raced for a six-year-old stallion.
Two back he saluted over 1500m at Moonee Valley and was last seen crossing second just a nose off fellow Naturalism Stakes nominated stablemate Chance To Dance in a mile handicap back at the track on September 5.
Along with the winning quinella that day Hickmott also has Gallante and Amralah nominated for the weekend’s race.
The next best Naturalism Stakes hope in futures Caulfield Cup betting this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained German import Our Ivanhowe ($34).
The Soldier Hollow stallion is a dual Group 1 winner overseas over 2400m and is also the 58kg top weight for the upcoming $750,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) in Sydney on October 3.
His only run down under to date was in mid-May at Morphettville when midfield in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m), an effort he is tipped to improve on when up in distance having never won over less than 2200m.
Other notable Caulfield Cup-bound gallopers entered for the Naturalism on Saturday include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Monsun stallion Excess Knowledge ($41), his imported stablemate Café Society and former Hong Kong galloper Almoonqith ($51) now prepared by David Hayes & Tom Dabernig.
Some of the other hopes coming off nice lead-up runs include the Ciaron Maher-trained Premier’s Cup third placegetter Kapour who was also runner-up in the Grafton Cup back in July, Darren Weir’s in-form veteran Our Voodoo Prince and Stawell-trained Magnapal who has won his past two on the trot.
Magnapal’s latest win was in the Listed Heatherlie Handicap (1700m) at Caulfield on Memsie Stakes Day, August 29, a race another Naturalism Stakes nominee Lord Durante ran fourth in before a second over 2040m at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago.
