2015 The Shorts Nominations Feature Reigning Champ Terravista

Joe Pride’s defending champion Terravista is one of the most notable nominations taken for The Shorts 2015 on George Main Stakes Day in Sydney this weekend.

A key support act on Saturday’s Royal Randwick meeting, the $200,000 Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) has attracted 16 sprinters this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival including last year’s champ Terravista.

The now six-year-old Captain Rio gelding won the set weights plus penalties clash second-up last season on the back of a win in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) at the same track.

Going on to win the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) down the Flemington straight that November in Melbourne, Terravista was also a dual Group 1 third placegetter in the autumn with brave runs behind Brazen Beau and Chautauqua in the Newmarket and TJ Smith last campaign.

He kicks off his latest campaign with a The Shorts title defence this year and boasts an imposing record of four wins and a third from five previous runs while fresh.

Pride has four The Shorts nominees this season with Terravista joined by stablemates Rock Sturdy after his first win since the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) last September, the super-consistent Ball Of Muscle who comes off a first-up third in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick a fortnight ago and who is yet to finish out of the top three in his 14 career starts, and Craftiness.

Starcraft gelding Craftiness also has an impressive place rate with just the one unplaced run from 10 starts that have produced six wins and three seconds including first-up behind Shiraz in the Concorde on September 5.

Tony McEvoy’s Concorde Stakes winning Zariz six-year-old Shiraz is also nominated for a rematch in The Shorts this weekend, the flying galloper shooting for his fifth win on the trot.

Other The Shorts nominees that ran a brave race last time out include the Peter Moody-trained Flamberge, Godolphin’s lightly-raced Haptic and the returning Peter & Paul Snowden-trained That’s A Good Idea.

Exceed And Excel six-year-old Flamberge won the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide back in mid-May before returning in Melbourne at Moonee Valley at the start of this month crossing a nice second to Chautauqua in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m).

Haptic has had just the four starts to date, the progressive three-year-old also from by Exceed And Excel.

A winner of two of those four runs, he was last seen crossing third to Japonisme in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill in mid-August.

That’s A Good Idea meanwhile hasn’t raced since late May when backing up from a black-type win at Scone to finish a quarter length second to fellow The Shorts hopeful Ball Of Muscle in Brisbane’s Group 2 QTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben.

Team Snowden also have Hot Snitzel nominated for Saturday, the now seven-year-old last seen running a credible fifth to Srikandi in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) in Queensland on the back of a Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) victory during the winter.
