2015 Tea Rose Stakes Nominations Feature 18 Class Fillies

Eighteen classy fillies make up the nominations for the Tea Rose Stakes 2015 at Randwick in Sydney this weekend as part of the George Main Stakes Day action.

A nice support act on the program this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival’s $175,000 Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) is a key lead-up into the $500,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) back at the track on Epsom Handicap Day, October 3.

Last year the Tea Rose Stakes – Flight Stakes double was achieved by the John Thompson-trained First Seal who also ran second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) to see out her spring prep.

Thompson has just the one Tea Rose Stakes hopeful entered this year with the in-form Honesta who, if accepted, will shoot for a hat-trick of wins on the trot.

The Monaco Consul filly comes off back-to-back Doomben wins over the mile, Saturday to be her first foray into stakes racing.

There are two other last start winners nominated for the Tea Rose on the weekend with Benjamin Smith’s lightly-raced In Her Time coming off a win on debut at Canterbury from the start of the month and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Flamboyant Lass.

Stratum filly Flamboyant Lass has had five starts to date for two wins and two thirds, her latest run a win over 1000m at Warwick Farm on August 26 in the wet.

Waterhouse has a total of three entries in the set weights race with Flamboyant Lass joined by returning Medaglia D’Oro filly Sempre Libera and the well-tried Kimberley Star.

A winner of three of her nine runs to date, Star Witness filly Kimberley Star has finished out of the top three just once.

Her two latest runs have both been in Group company at Randwick Racecourse when runner-up to stablemate Speak Fondly in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 22 and then third when beaten just over half a length by Metallic Crown in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) on September 5 up against the boys.

The two top-rated fillies in the mix are the Clarry Conners-trained Look To The Stars and Ottoman for John O’Shea.

Look To The Stars was a Group 2 winner in Brisbane in May before her third to Press Statement in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Doomben as a juvenile, but is out to atone for a dead last first-up when ninth in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago.

Godolphin-raced Ottoman was better in her resuming run, the daughter of Exceed And Excel crossing third in the same race in her first start since winning the Group 3 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) on a Heavy Randwick track during April’s The Championships.

Along with Ottoman O’Shea also has Silver Shadow fourth placed Domesday filly Italy and the progressive Pearls nominated for the Tea Rose.

Other notable entries include the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel filly Fireworks, her dual Group 2 second placed stablemate Perignon and Team Hawkes’s Golden Slipper third placed Lake Geneva last seen running fourth in the Furious Stakes second-up.

The full Tea Rose Stakes 2015 nominations are detailed below, numbers that will be cut at final acceptance stage on Wednesday.
