Kingston Town Stakes 2015 Tips & Selections

There may be only seven runners left in the 2015 Kingston Town Stakes field for Saturday in Sydney but there is still plenty of class left among the ranks for the handicap clash, betting tips for which are detailed below.

Silverball

Originally there were eight final acceptors for this weekend’s $125,000 Group 3 Sky Thoroughbred Central Kingston Town Stakes (2000m), running as Race 2 at Rosehill Gardens on Golden Rose Stakes Day.

The early scratching of Temps Voleur however has left a diminutive line-up of seven hopefuls, the Kingston Town Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au firmly led by the Chris Waller-trained odds on favourite Silverball ($1.90).

Jumping from barrier four with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle, the seven-year-old grey is third-up on the weekend having had two previous Rosehill runs this time in.

The latest was a second when beaten a nostril flare by Magic Hurricane in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) on August 29 giving him a solid record at the track (4-1-2-0) he returns to this weekend as the 58kg top weight.

The next best in the Kingston Town Stakes odds are the Godolphin-raced import Havana Cooler ($6.50), the super-consistent Maurus ($8) who has finished out of the top two just twice in his 10 start career to date and the Gai Waterhouse-trained market mover King Kinshasa ($8) coming off a Hawkesbury win from last month.

So can the shortie in the markets salute for the punters or is there an upset Kingston Town Stakes result pending this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival from the likes of the flying Skyline Blush ($10) who shoots for four straight wins?

1st

#6 King Kinshasa ($8)

Following the early money trail for value here with Waterhouse’s imported Pivotal gelding ticking plenty of boxes. He debuted down under on August 29 at Hawkesbury and kicked things off with a notable two and a half length win over 1800m carrying 57kg. The step up in distance this weekend should suit as he has winning form up to 2400m, and the drop back to the 54.5kg minimum also works in his favour. There are only six to beat and he is as good a chance as any at a nice price.

2nd

#1 Silverball ($1.90)

Waller prepares the deserving favourite who is just a bit too short at the odds-on price to take for the win. Don’t expect there to be much in the finish though even with the Kahyasi gelding carrying the top weight. He had the same kilos on his back when just nosed out of the black-type win at the same track over 200m shorter last time out and going up to 2000m should work. He’s got a good Rosehill record so far (4-1-2-0) and won third-up at Flemington last prep.

3rd

#5 Maurus ($8)

David Vandyke’s Medicean gelding is yet to really run a bad race with four wins and four seconds from 10 starts, including his only other Rosehill run back in late June over 1900m. He ran again over the same distance at Canterbury on September 2 and narrowly won carrying a big 60.5kg making the drop back to 54.5kg this weekend a big relief.
