Hawkes Wary of Large Pin & Win Stakes Field

Snoopy is yet to taste anything but success through a short but impressive racing career so far and while confident the colt of capable of success in the Listed Pin & Win Stakes (1400m) at Flemington, trainer Wayne Hawkes is wary of a big field.

The classy son of Lope De Vega stamped his claims as one to watch when charging home to win the Mangalore Park Maiden (1200m) on debut in January before immediately returning to the paddock.

Having comfortably taken out each of the Cove Hotel BM64 (1300m) and Hygain BM70 (1400m) upon resuming this time, Hawkes told Racing Ahead he has no doubts Snoopy has the class to win the Pin & Win Stakes; his biggest concern lying with the size of the field confirmed.

“He’s done everything right, albeit we’ve gone in the lesser grades and just taken him along slowly,” Hawkes said.

“The 1400m at Flemington just looks like what he wants, he looks like he wants nine furlongs and once you start getting over a trip you never know how long they’re going to get.

“It’s a big field that race and that’s going to be the biggest opposition.

“He’s drawn 2 I think so he’s going to have a good run up on the pace there somewhere.

“He led the other day and it probably wasn’t where he wanted to be – sitting 1,1 will be perfect and it’s where he should be from that good barrier.”

Team Hawkes are yet to set a specific target for Snoopy this season, but Wayne Hawkes added the progression the three-year-old has made through recent months suggests the 2015 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) remains an option.

“If you had asked me 2 months ago Caulfield Guineas I would have said probably no, but who would have thought the now three-year-olds have gone amiss and haven’t won a race,” he said.

“He’d have to win and win really well, but you’d have to think something like the Caulfield Classic.”
