An exciting line-up of Group 1 bound Sydney Spring Racing Carnival hopes face off in Saturday’s Theo Marks Stakes 2015 at Rosehill Gardens, betting tips for the handicap clash found below.
There will be 14 lining-up in Golden Rose Stakes Day Race 7 at 4:25pm (AEST) when emergency runner Turbulent Jet ($34) comes in to complete the capacity field for the $200,000 Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) in the place of the scratched Vezalay who races in Melbourne instead on Saturday.
Leading the latest Theo Marks Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at $4 is the Chris Waller-trained mare Winx jumping from barrier 11 with top Sydney-based James McDonald in the saddle.
Getting in on 54.5kg, Street Cry four-year-old Winx won two on the trot last campaign including the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) on May 30 at Doomben and shoots for her third win from four starts at Rosehill first-up.
Other top fancies in the Theo Marks Stakes odds on the weekend include the John O’Shea-trained market mover Vashka ($4.80) coming off a third in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) at Randwick and lightly-raced seven-year-old Messene ($6.50) drawn a treat in gate two with Tommy Berry to ride the Team Hawkes-trained veteran.
Are the top three in betting the ones to get behind for your Theo Marks Stakes bets this weekend or is there value further down the markets from the likes of Waller’s returning Strawberry Boy ($9) or stablemate Heart Testa ($13) coming off a Show County fourth?
#2 Messene ($6.50)
This Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Lonhro gelding has his 19th start here shooting for win number 10 and looks set to peak third-up after two good efforts at Randwick. He was last seen crossing third behind Group 1 winners Royal Descent and Pornichet in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) on August 22. He drops back in distance and has won his only other Rosehill run when beating home Waller’s French import Weary in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) in March last year. That was his last time in the winner’s stall but that can change on the weekend with the right run from his good gate with Berry likely to take him up on the pace.
#11 Nostradamus ($17)
Awesome value being offered on Team Hawkes’s other runner, the nicely-bred Medaglia D’Oro four-year-old’s last win being in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) at the Gold Coast in late April. He comes off a first-up second over 1100m at Doomben and goes up over this distance for the first time. Has a top barrier four draw with Tim Clark booked for the ride on the 53kg minimum that he will appreciate after carrying 58kg last time out.
#8 Winx ($4)
Impossible not to include the Waller-trained favourite in your top three even from the wide barrier. Her form at the end of her last prep was top notch including the Group 1 win in Queensland and she’ll only improve on what she does here when up over more distance. She goes well fresh winning two of her previous three first-up assignments and has the same two-from-three record at Rosehill Gardens where her last start was a fifth in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) in late March.
