Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The opening Group 1 race of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival lights up Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday with the three-year-olds facing off in the Golden Rose 2015, betting tips and exotic selection for the classic detailed below.
There are just eight runners left in the field for this year’s $1 million Group 1 De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), which runs as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:45pm (AEST), after Peter Moody withdrew his last start McNeil Stakes winner Gold Symphony due to an elevated temperature.
There are now three single figure hopes in the current Golden Rose Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on all the even races at Rosehill on Saturday including the Group 1, with the Godolphin-raced Exosphere the narrow $3 favourite.
The John O’Shea-trained Lonhro colt will now get the rails run from barrier one shooting for the same double achieved by Hallowed Crown last Sydney Spring Racing Carnival after he won the Group 2 The Run To The Rose (1200m) at the track last time out on August 29.
Runner-up in that race first-up was Chris Waller’s JJ Atkins winner Press Statement who has firmed din from $3.70 to $3.20 to go one better in Saturday’s rematch with a Golden Rose win to give the son of Hinchinbrook two Group 1 wins on his record.
Rounding out the single figure hopes is then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Northern Meteor filly Speak Fondly who has been backed in from $5.50 to $4.40 to join Dandify (2000) and Forensics (2008) as the only two Golden Rose winning fillies in the past 15 years.
She has won her past two on the trot in Group 2 company making her a triple Group 2 winner heading into Saturday’s test.
So will one of the top three in betting salute for the punters or is there an upset Golden Rose Stakes result on the cards this weekend from a longer priced hopeful such as O’Shea’s last start Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes winner Shards ($11)?
#1 Press Statement ($3.20)
Waller’s Hinchinbrook has buckets of class having won the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) over the mile in Brisbane as a two-year-old during the winter before returning with an eye-catching second in The Run To The Rose that has produced the past three Golden Rose winners. He’ll improve on that with the extra 200m this weekend and Tye Angland retains the ride from a gun gate two draw. Step up in distance for this proven miler is the key to another Group 1 win.
#9 Speak Fondly ($4.40)
While the fillies have a poor record throughout Golden Rose history there’s plenty to like about this Waterhouse-trained galloper. She is a triple Group 2 winner and comes off back-to-back Sydney wins in that class against her own sex. She takes on the boys here and while history is against her, the lead-up form is too good to ignore. The booking of Brett Prebble is another big plus and barrier three will suit to a tee. She’s a winning chance for sure if things go her way.
#5 Shards ($11)
The bookies might be backing the impressive Run To The Rose winner Exosphere but something about the better priced stablemate Shards stands out. He is looking to complete the Up & Coming Stakes – Golden Rose double for the first time since Manawanui (2011), but having handled that class rise looks a big hope of making the jump to Group 1 company in small field.
