Leebaz Tops 2015 The Sofitel Field & Weights

The returning Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Leebaz will carry top weight in The Sofitel 2015 at Flemington Racecourse on Makybe Diva Stakes Day this weekend.

The Zabeel six-year-old is only lightly raced having his 19th start on Saturday in the $120,000 Listed The Sofitel (1400m), a handicap clash that has attracted 14 final acceptors, where he will carry the 60kg top weight.

Drawn nicely in gate two with Dwyane Dunn to ride first-up, Leebaz was last seen running a disappointing 14th to Pornichet in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 9 following his victory in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast.

He kicks off another campaign in Melbourne on Saturday and has won three of his previous five first-up assignments, Leebaz a possible runner in Sydney’s $1 million Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on October 3 paying $17 through Ladbrokes.com.au to win.

Following Leebaz in The Sofitel field and weights are Akzar (58kg) and Guest Of Honour (58kg) drawn in barriers 10 and eight respectively for their first-up runs.

Darren Weir’s veteran nine-year-old Akzar was last seen crossing fifth to Grand Marshall in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) in April, his last win being in May last year when taking at the Warrnambool Cup.

Guest Of Honour meanwhile is yet to win down under, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained import’s last victory being in the Group 2 Summer Mile (1600m) at Ascot in July last year.

He has had three unplaced runs in Australia, the latest of which was in the Golden Mile at Bendigo in March when crossing a well beaten 10th behind Observational.

Hayes & Dabernig have also accepted for Jacquinot Bay (57.5kg) out in barrier 12 with Michael Walker to ride the Galileo eight-year-old second-up on the back of a second behind Charmed Harmony over 1400m at Caulfield on Memsie Stakes Day.

Also coming off a nice lead-up into The Sofitel are the likes of the Paul Beshara-trained Richie’s Vibe who ran fourth to Bounding in the Group 3 The Heath 1100 at Caulfield on August 29 and the Michael Moroney-trained Regal Roller Stakes third placed Yesterday’s Songs.

Other notable hopes in the mix include last year’s Toorak Handicap fourth placegetter Akavoroun who has won six of his 14 starts to date, the Mick Price-trained Sebring four-year-old Pressing who was one of the top two-year-olds last year and former Perth star Disposition.

Drawn in barrier four with Damien Oliver to ride, the now Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Disposition has finished out of the top two in just one of his eight starts to date, which have produced four wins and three seconds.

He hasn’t won since a black-type last November but was runner-up to Chris Waller’s Sydney visitor Moriarty in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in December.

Disposition has had two starts in Melbourne crossing second to Australian Guineas winner Wandjina in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) in February and then fourth to Watermans Bay in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) on April 4.
