Famous Seamus Tops 2015 Theo Marks Stakes Field & Weights

Noel Mayfield-Smith’s returning sprinter Famous Seamus is installed as the top weight for Saturday’s Theo Marks Stakes 2015 at Rosehill Gardens on Golden Rose Stakes Day.

Due to run as Rosehill Race 7 at 4:25pm (AEST), this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) has attracted a full field of 14 starters plus the Lee Curtis-trained Turbulent Jet as the sole emergency.

Sitting top of the field and weights with 59kg is Elusive City seven-year-old Famous Seamus who Kathy O’Hara will ride from an awkward barrier 14 draw with the big weight first-up.

It has been a long time between drinks for the galloper who hasn’t won a race since a Group 2 at Randwick back in October last year, his last start being a ninth when beaten three and a half lengths by Dissident in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on April 18.

Following Famous Seamus in the Theo Marks Stakes weights this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival are Messene (58.5kg) for Team Hawkes and the Chris Waller-trained Strawberry Boy (58kg) who have both drawn better in barriers two and five respectively.

Lonhro seven-year-old Messene has won his only other start at Rosehill and is third-up this weekend, the consistent gelding last seen running a brave third when beaten under two lengths by Group 1 winning mare Royal Descent in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) on August 22.

Strawberry Boy has Jim ‘The Pumper’ Cassidy in the saddle after Zac Purton rode the Redoute’s Choice gelding to back-to-back victories last prep at Doomben in black-type company over the mile.

He’s undefeated over Saturday’s 1300m distance but is yet to win at Rosehill with his five previous starts at the track producing three third place finishes.

Master Sydney trainer Waller also has Heart Testa (barrier nine) and Winx (barrier 11) in the Theo Marks field on Saturday.

Testa Rossa six-year-old Heart Testa comes off a close fourth when beaten only half a length first-up by Decision Time in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) and boasts an imposing second-up record of three wins and a third from five runs.

Winx has James McDonald riding for her return, the four-year-old Street Cry mare last seen winning the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben on May 30.

She’s won two of her past three first-up runs and has the same two-from-three record at Rosehill.

Her last Sydney run was a second to Gust Of Wind in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) on April 11 at Randwick and she will only improve on what she does here with her best distance longer than what she’ll get on the weekend.

Also first-up for one of Sydney’s best stables is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Northern Meteor mare Amanpour jumping from barrier eight with Hong Kong-based hoop Brett Prebble back down under for the ride.

Amanpour was last seen winning the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) during The Championships and has run second in three of her four previous resuming runs.

A host of good gallopers boast a fitness edge over those resuming coming off nice lead-up runs into the Theo Marks Stakes on the weekend including the Ron Quinton-trained Show County runner-up Boss Lane, the John O’Shea-trained third placegetter in the same race Vashka and Shamardal four-year-old mare Vezalay who ran third in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 29.
