Bounding Tops 2015 Sheraco Stakes Field

Peter & Paul Snowden’s classy mare Bounding is the headline acceptor for Saturday’s Sheraco Stakes 2015 field in Sydney, the sprint taking place as part of Golden Rose Day at Rosehill Gardens.

Running as Race 5 at 3:05pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Irresistible Pools Sheraco Stakes (1200m) features a final field of only nine fillies and mares.

Wearing the number one saddlecloth in barrier four is super-consistent Lonhro five-year-old Bounding who has finished worse than second in just one of her 15 runs to date when dead last in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) last Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley.

She returned to racing after a lengthy let off on August 29 at Caulfield and won the Group 3 The Heath 1100 and now makes the trip to Sydney for her first run at Rosehill over her pet distance (9-4-4-4-0).

The other headline hopeful is Chris Waller’s defending Sheraco Stakes winner Catkins in gate six with James McDonald riding the six-year-old grey whose last run was a sixth to Srikandi in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara (1400m) on the Gold Coast on June 20.

Catkins has an imposing record at Rosehill with eight wins, three seconds and a third from her 14 starts at the track including the first-up win in last year’s Sheraco Stakes after her fourth in last year’s Tiara.

Also set to resume in the Sheraco this year are the likes of Jason Coyle’s Group 3 James Carr Stakes (1400m) winner from April Slightly Sweet and the Bede Murray-trained Good Journey four-year-old Fine Mist.

Among those with the fitness edge are Ron Quinton’s last start winner at the track and distance Peeping who has twice won over the 1200m at Rosehill and who is drawn a treat in gate two with Sam Clipperton riding on Saturday, and the rails-drawn Fiftyshadesofgrey.

Rounding out the Sheraco Stakes line-up this spring are Team Hawkes’s More Than Ready mare Mihiri in gate three with Tommy Berry booked for the ride, and the Gai Waterhouse-trained stablemates Echo Gal and Supara drawn in gates five and nine respectively.

Stratum four-year-old Echo Gal ran a brave second just a quarter length off Amicus in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) on August 22 at Randwick before her disappointing 11th at Wyong in last Friday’s Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) she is tipped to improve on when dropped back in distance this weekend.

Supara has the outside barrier to overcome with Christian Reith in the saddle, the Domesday four-year-old coming off a below par ninth first-up behind Sultry Feeling over 1100m with Tim Clark aboard.
