Chris Waller’s five-time Group 1 winning Sydney visitor Boban is in Melbourne again this weekend attempting a sixth elite level win as the favourite in Saturday’s Makybe Diva Stakes 2015 field and odds at Flemington Racecourse.
Set to run as Flemington Race 7 at 4:05pm (AEST), this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) field features a full 16 starters plus an emergency in the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Awesome Rock.
Leading the latest Makybe Diva Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.50 for the win after a gun barrier four draw is Waller’s Bernardini six-year-old Boban who Glyn Schofield stays aboard – the hoop shooting for his first win in the weight-for-age classic.
Boban was last seen winning the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) first-up at Caulfield late last month and has had three pervious Flemington runs for just the one win, Saturday his chance to go back-to-back for the favourites in the Makybe Diva Stakes following the win of Dissident 12 months ago.
Despite the big field there are just three other runners under double figures in Makybe Diva Stakes betting this season including market mover Fawkner ($8.50 into $7).
Drawn wide in barrier 14 with triple Makybe Diva Stakes winning jockey Damien Oliver in the saddle, the Robert Hickmott-trained veteran Reset eight-year-old is first-up on Saturday not having raced since a 10th in last year’s Melbourne Cup.
Fawkner ran second in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) before that on the back of a Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) win in October, and was also runner-up to the since retired Dissident in last year’s Makybe Diva Stakes.
Oliver meanwhile rode Marble Halls (1997), Sky Heights (199) and Vigor (2009) to victory in the race and is out to make it a quartet on the weekend.
The other two single figure fancies are Alpine Eagle ($7.50) and Weary ($8.50) drawn beside one another in barriers 12 and 13 respectively.
Tony McEvoy’s young Adelaide raider Alpine Eagle is heading towards the spring majors after a first-up second to Riziz back home in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) on August 22.
He was super competitive as a three-year-old in the autumn including a Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) win at Caulfield and his second in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington in March.
Weary is a stablemate of Boban and the only other Makybe Diva Stakes runner for Waller, the French import to be ridden by Craig Newitt third-up in the feature.
First-up the Astronomer Royal grey ran second in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) in Sydney and then he raced at Caulfield when finishing under one and a half lengths away fourth to Boban in the Memsie.
Outside the top four in betting are a host of other hopefuls at generous odds with genuine claims for an upset Makybe Diva Stakes result including Rosehill Guineas winning Kiwi visitor Volkstok’n’barrell, the Peter Moody-trained Hi World who ran fifth in the Memsie and the now David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained New Zealand expat Rising Romance all paying $11.
Following closely on $12 are then Paul Beshara’s veteran eight-year-old Happy Trails in gate three with Glen Boss riding and Memsie Stakes runner-up Entirely Platinum drawn awkwardly in gate 15.
