There are 22 mares nominated for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) including Al Maher five-year-old Madam Gangster who beat a similar field of rivals home last start in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) on August 29.

Before that she hadn’t raced since a strong autumn campaign that included a win in the Group 3 Tressady Stakes (1400m) at Flemington and a solid fourth to Catkins in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill.

She has had three previous runs at Flemington for two wins and if she is successful again this weekend could next contest the $200,000 Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Friday October 2 under the lights.

Other mares that ran well in the Cockram Stakes nominated for a Let’s Elope Stakes rematch include Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes winning six-year-old Hazard (2nd), Shamardal four-year-old Vezalay (3rd), Darren Weir’s daughter of New Approach May’s Dream (4th) and Jessy Belle (5th) who won back-to-back winter races at Flemington before the Cockram at Caulfield.

It was a blanket finish in the Cockram this year with less than two lengths separating the first eight over the line with others in that top eight nominated for Saturday being the Gai Waterhouse-trained Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour (7th) and the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Girl Guide (8th).

Northern Meteor five-year-old Cosmic Endeavour hasn’t won a race since the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) in early March at Randwick and has her first Flemington run on the weekend if accepted.

Along with Girl Guide, Lindsay Park co-trainers Hayes & Dabernig have also nominated for the in-form Stratum four-year-old Tawteen who won at Moonee Valley carrying 60kg on August 22.

Other notable mares in the mix include the Chris Waller-trained Amicus who won the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) first-up in Sydney, fourth placed mare in that same race Maastricht, lightly-raced New Zealand expat Sardaaj who is yet to finish out of the money (5-2-3-0) and Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes winner Fenway who hasn’t raced since her second in the Group 1 SA Oaks (2000m) in Adelaide on May 2.

Also among the noteworthy nominees are Gwenda Johnstone’s Precious Gem and eight-year-old Platinum Rocker who comes off back-to-back black-type seconds at Caulfield behind Smokin’ Joey in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) and then Setinum in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) on August 15.
