Thousand Guineas Hope Stay With Me Wins Atlantic Jewel

David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s class filly Stay With Me made it two from two this campaign with a nice win in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes on way to the 2015 Thousand Guineas next month.

A $15 chance in pre-field betting at for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) over the mile at Caulfield on October 10 before her Moonee Valley win on Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes Day, the Lindsay Park-trained daughter of Street Cry was too strong to the line in the $120,000 Listed Telstra Phonewords Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m).

A capacity field of 14 three-year-old fillies faced off in the set weights plus penalties race, an event that favoured the backmarkers with the early pace set by the winning filly’s stablemate Haybah.

Peter Moody’s returning Group 1 winner and early Thousand Guineas favourite Pasadena Girl was drawn wide first-up in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes and was tracking second last with 600m to go as Haybah continued to lead them around.

As they approached the turn for home Stay With Me ($4.60) and her hoop Dwayne Dunn were still a long way back, plenty of ground to be made up on the straight.

Around the bend Dunn took Stay With Me right around the outside and she made a charging run for the line.

She claimed the lead with 50 metres left to travel and was too strong for the other late runners from the back including Moody’s Savabeel filly Pasadena Girl ($5.50) who crossed for an eye-catching second.

In a photo finish for third the returning Ciaron Maher-trained Jameka ($15), last seen winning the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in mid-March, was found to have just held off the Tony McEvoy-trained Don’t Tell Mamma from Adelaide.

It was an outstanding win for Stay With Me who was too good form the back of the field, her co-trainer Hayes seeking his third Thousand Guineas win if she goes into the Group 1 next month on Caulfield Guineas Day having previously won with Miss Finland (2006) and Irish Lights (2009).
