A 51/1 outsider in betting, the John O’Shea-trained Complacent won his first race since this three-year-old season back in 2013 with an upset in the Chelmsford Stakes 2015 at Royal Randwick.
The Godolphin galloper was a former top line youngster showing plenty of promise with a Group 1 win in the 2013 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick before his second in the same year’s Victoria Derby at Flemington.
A bowed tendon saw him ruled out of racing for nearly two years, the team working hard to get him back.
He resumed at Randwick on August 22 in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) but could only manage to run a distant 12th to Chris Waller’s mare Royal Descent as a $40 roughie.
Complacent was even longer in the markets for his second-up run in the $250,000 Group 2 Tattersalls Club Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), which attracted a similar field to the Warwick Stakes.
Jockey Sam Clipperton continued his top run of form for the Godolphin stable though and took the now five-year-old Authorized stallion to the front early from barrier five.
It was an outstanding all-the-way effort from Complacent and Clipperton, who took over from Christian Reith in the saddle, who lead from jump to the line where he proved too strong for all his rivals.
Complacent ($51) kept the Waller-trained duo of Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec ($5) and Warwick Stakes winner Royal Descent ($3.70) at bay, the beaten brigade without too many excuses.
Having bounced on the lead, Complacent got all the favours up front and was the definite forgotten horse in the race but proved when he was sound and injury-free he was still a class galloper with plenty of wins left in him.
Kermadec is sure to improve on his second place finish second-up after sitting three deep on the speed, while Royal Descent was also far from disgraced recording yet another top three finish after the photo result for the final place with returning The BMW winner Hartnell went her way.
“An unbelievable performance,” O’Shea summed up the race post-win.
“He’s a great horse and he presented beautifully.
“He race dup to it, and his work on Wednesday was first class.
“Very rewarding for everyone.”
O’Shea was hoping for another win this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival naming the $200,000 Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) back at Randwick on September 12 as the next-up assignment for the champ on George Main Stakes Day.
“He’s a magnificent horse, hopefully we can keep him sound sure that’s not the run he has this season,” he said.
“Key for him is he needs to stay in Sydney…we’ll have a chat and find another race.
“We planned to take him in the Hill [Stakes] and that’s probably a nice progression for him.”
