Chautauqua Too Good in 2015 McEwen Stakes – Results

The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained returning Group 1 sprinter Chautauqua was far too good for his rivals first-up at Moonee Valley on Saturday scoring an impressive late win in the McEwen Stakes 2015.

Winner of the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) in Sydney during April’s The Championships, the now five-year-old Encosta De Lago grey was last seen running third to the since retired Dissident in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

He raced not in Sydney first-up but Melbourne and kicked off his spring campaign in fine style running away to win the $200,000 Group 2 Mitty’s McEwen Stakes (1000m) under weight-for-age conditions that suited the gelding.

In his first Moonee Valley run, Chautauqua and jockey Dwayne Dunn went back to fourth last after the jump with the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Sistonic moving up to take the lead from I’m All The Talk after settling.

Furnaces meanwhile was tracking nicely in third, the John O’Shea-trained Exceed And Excel colt first-up after a Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) win in the wet as a juvenile during the autumn.

Chautauqua certainly gave away a big lead early and was trailing as far back as 12 lengths at one stage and was still eight lengths off the speed as they neared the turn.

While many came with their runs including Furnaces who peeled away from the rails to go, Chautauqua ($2.60) went straight past them and did it all too easy in the end saluting for the punters with a one and a half-length margin go spare over the Peter Moody-trained The Goodwood winner Flamberge ($5.50).

In third a further one and a quarter lengths away to finish off the McEwen Stakes trifecta was then Godolphin’s young improver Furnaces ($5.50) before the $101 roughie of the field Klishina ran a surprise fourth.

Chautauqua is now set to head back to Moonee Valley $450,000 Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) under the lights on Friday October 2 before a run in the $1 million Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival on November 7.
