Beyond Thankful Wins 2015 Wyong Gold Cup – Results

Chris Waller’s in-form Irish import Beyond Thankful returned to the winner’s stall at Wyong Racecourse on Friday afternoon overcoming an awkward gate and big weight to take out the Wyong Gold Cup 2015.

The six-year-old son of Whipper won back-to-back Sydney races earlier this prep before his fourth behind Magic Hurricane in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill on august 29.

On the six day turnaround the gelding put in a stellar effort in yesterday’s $150,000 Listed Carlton Mid Wyong Gold Cup (2080m) carrying a hefty 58kg to a half-length win over roughie shot Just As Cosmic ($31).

Jockey Hugh Bowman retained the ride on Beyond Thankful ($5.50) in the quality handicap feature that ran with 13 starters.

On the line the duo had a half-length to spare over Jason Coyle’s smart mare Just As Cosmic, ridden by Tommy Berry, who came off another second in the Taree Cup (2000m) from August 23.

Finishing off the Wyong Gold Cup trifecta just a nose further back for third was then John Thompson’s progressive Le Harve stallion Orbec ($4.40), the French import having just his second run down under having also run second to Beyond Thankful when narrowly defeated in the Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m) at Rosehill in mid-August.

Beyond Thankful has now won seven of his total 34 career starts for $442,294 in prize money, his Wyong Gold Cup victory handing Sydney’s premier trainer Waller with his fifth win in the feature.

It was a gun ride from the experienced Bowman who, from the wide barrier 13 of 13 draw, had his mount in the first half of the field.

Racing at the track on Wyong Gold Cup Day favoured those up front, and Bowman capitalised on that with Beyond Thankful who got the break on Gai Waterhouse’s former Sydney Cup winner and last star Rowley Mile champ The Offer and the other well-fancied runner Havana Cooler who was eventually last past the post beaten seven lengths.

“I knew I had the tactical speed and I was happy to make use of it,” Bowman told Sky Thoroughbred Central post-win on Friday.

“The way the track is playing here today I knew some of those main dangers would be needing a bit of drag in and they’d be needing to make up a bit of ground.

“I thought if I made it a bit of a test it might help my horse’s chances and the horse didn’t let me down.”

Waller’s first Wyong Gold Cup winner was Hawk Island (2010) and since then his only loss in the race was in 2012 when Waterhouse stole the show with Julienas.

Last year Waller won with Multilateral (2014) who went on to run a below par seventh in the Newcastle Gold Cup.

This year’s $175,000 Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) runs on September 18 and could be on the agenda for Beyond Thankful next race.
