2015 Sir Rupert Clarke Aim for Mona Lisa Winner Vergara

Anthony Cummings’ smart mare Vergara heads towards a Group 1 run in Melbourne this spring with the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2015 on the agenda after her Mona Lisa Stakes win in Wyong on Friday afternoon.

After losing his father, legendary horse trainer Bart Cummings last Sunday, Cummings enjoyed a win on Wyong Gold Cup Day in the meeting’s support race – the $100,000 Listed Arrowfield Stud Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m).

A full field of 15 fillies and mares lined-up in the set weights plus penalties clash including five-year-old Snippetson mare Vergara who was last seen running second over 1500m in the wet at Rosehill back in late June.

She had a nice association at Wyong with a previous win and two thirds from four starts, returning to the NSW Central Coast track for the first time since March last year.

Ridden by Christian Reith, Vergara ($8) overcame a nasty barrier 13 draw to beat home Kristen Buchanan’s perennial placegetter Two Blue ($9) by half a length, the locally-trained seven-year-old runner-up finishing second for the third time in her past four runs.

Rounding out the Mona Lisa Stakes trifecta a further three lengths back in a well beaten third was then the Kim Waugh-trained roughie Oxford Heart ($41) who has now run third in both of her Wyong runs.

Reith, who snared the Mona Lisa ride late, had his mount poised outside the leader Two Blue before surging forward over the final 100m to take it out.

After the win Cummings confirmed plans to take his Mona Lisa Stakes winner Vergara, who now boasts seven victories from 23 career starts, to Victoria for a shot at the $400,000 Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse on September 26.

“This is stage one of a long-term plan to get to the Rupert Clarke Stakes in Melbourne,” he told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

Cummings has saddled-up six previous Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes runners for one second and a third.

He also saddled-up two other winners at Wyong on Friday with race favourite Muraqaba winning the last on the card with Blake Shinn in the saddle and Puzzling Wonder saluting for the same hoop in the third.
