The major support race on the Wyong Gold Cup Day card this afternoon is the Mona Lisa Stakes 2015 for fillies and mares where the Gai Waterhouse-trained Echo Gal is the clear favourite to win.
Due to run as Wyong Race 6 at 3:55pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed Arrowfield Stud Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) is a capacity field even with #3 Candelara and #7 Holy Delusions scratched from the original line-up.
Emergency runners Il Mio Destino ($71) and Magnolia Lane ($81) come in for the withdrawn horses keeping a full 16 in the mix for the set weights plus penalties clash.
Leading the Mona Lisa Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Waterhouse’s rails-drawn daughter of Stratum Echo Gal, the four-year-old mare coming off two nice runs from last month in Sydney.
A winner of four of her 15 starts to date she won at Randwick over 1200m by a tidy two and a quarter lengths on August 8 and was last seen crossing a brave second when only a quarter length off the winner Amicus in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) at the same track a fortnight later.
She pays $3.20 to continue her good form today with Tommy Berry booked for the ride from the inside alley.
There are three other single figure hopes in Mona Lisa Stakes betting markets this spring with market mover Berry Delicious ($6.50 into $4.60) well fancied despite an outside draw, Marple Miss ($7) and Two Blue ($7.50) who in-form hoop Blake Shinn rides.
Jason Coyle’s Blevic four-year-old has finished out of the money just twice in her 15 starts and boasts five wins, the last three of those won on the trot during a strong winter in Sydney.
Today is her first foray into black-type racing, and she looks set to make the upgrade in class based on her strong performances to date with her last start being a win in the wet at Rosehill over 1350m on July 18.
Marple Miss has a top barrier in gate five with veteran Jim Cassidy in the saddle, the Kris Lees-trained Not A Single Doubt four-year-old coming off a third over 1400m at Rosehill from August 15.
She’s won four of her 10 starts so far, including three from five over the distance, so has genuine Each Way claims third-up here.
Two Blue has the gun jockey on her back in Shinn, the Kristen Buchanan-trained local Dubleo mare having performed well in Sydney over the winter.
The seven-year-old was twice runner-up in Listed company when a neck off Haussmann in the Civic Stakes and a nose off Rugged Cross in the Winter Stakes before finishing second last when seventh in the Toy Show last start.
Outside the single figure fancies the next best representing the value are Group 1 performer Press Report ($11) jumping from gate two, Gary Moore’s super consistent Choisir mare Shengli ($11) coming off a win at Canterbury and who ran third in March’s Listed Canberra Guineas (1400m), and the Anthony Cummings-trained Snippetson mare Vergara ($15).
