2015 Wyong Gold Cup Tips

This afternoon the Wyong Gold Cup 2015 takes place on the New South Wales’ Central Coast with betting tips for the handicap clash detailed below.

Beyond Thankful

Running as Wyong Race 7 at 4:35pm (AEST), there are 13 left in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Listed Carlton Mid Wyong Gold Cup (2080m) following the early scratching of #9 Orion Love and #14 Zayam.

Leading the latest Wyong Gold Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at a quote of $3.30 is the John O’Shea-trained Havana Cooler, the Hurricane Run six-year-old out to improve on a sixth in his Australian debut on August 15 behind Beyond Thankful in the Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m).

It was a blanket finish in the Premier’s Cup Prelude, Havana Cooler beaten only half a length after jumping from barrier 12 and from a better gate (nine) with Sam Clipperton retaining the ride the galloper looks a big chance to improve.

Others high up the current Wyong Gold Cup odds include quality import Orbec ($4) drawn well in gate two for his second run down under following a second in the same race that produces Havana Cooler, Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 winning market mover The Offer ($6) and the aforementioned Premier’s Cup Prelude winner Beyond Thankful ($8).

So will one of the single figure hopes take out the Wyong Gold Cup or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of Paul Perry’s Taree Cup winner last time out Ghost Protocol ($14) or Taree Cup runner-up Just As Cosmic ($26) getting in on the light weight?

1st

#2 Beyond Thankful ($8)

Chris Waller’s in-form Whipper six-year-old is the 58kg second top weight, dropping half a kilo from the weight he had on his back when fourth to Magic Hurricane in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) just last Saturday. Before that he saluted in back-to-back Sydney races, and while on the short back-up into today’s clash he’s got the form and class to suggest he can be competitive even with those kilos. Is drawn wide but Hugh Bowman will know where to place him and if they get the clear run can close in late and surprise a few.

2nd

#8 Havana Cooler ($3.30)

Havana Cooler really caught the eye in his debut down under three weeks back, the gelding just nudged out of the placings at Rosehill after getting caught back from a nasty gate. He was very unlucky not to get in the money or even win after his unpredictable run down the straight. Should get a smoother and clearer run home here and will get his chance at an Australian black-type if he does.

3rd

#1 The Offer ($6)

The only reason this former Sydney Cup winner is not top of betting and tipping is the hefty 62kg top weight. The Montjeu seven-year-old was impressive in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) on August 20 at Hawkesbury finishing first a full length clear of his closest rival when carrying a kilo less than his allocated weight today. Is classy and was terrific last time out, but still a big place chance and firming in the markets despite the weight.
