The Offer Leads 2015 Wyong Gold Cup Field

Gai Waterhouse’s last start Rowley Mile winner The Offer is the headline final acceptor for the Wyong Gold Cup 2015 field this Friday.

The Montjeu seven-year-old won his first race since the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) back in 2014 when resuming in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) at Hawkesbury on August 20 to score a one length win carrying the 61kg.

This week he runs in another provincial New South Wales feature, engaged in the field for the $150,000 Listed Carlton Mid Wyong Gold Cup (2080m).

Originally the handicap attracted a 15 starter field, but after drawing the outside alley the Louis Baudron-trained Orion Love has been scratched.

Set to run as Wyong Race 7 at 4:35pm (AEST) on Friday afternoon, this year’s Wyong Gold Cup line-up has The Offer drawn wide in barrier 13 with Blake Shinn retaining the ride.

While the $1.25 million earner was impressive under the hefty weight in the Rowley Mile, he goes up again carrying 62kg this week.

Waterhouse has also accepted for Café Society (57.5kg) who has drawn a treat in barrier three with Kerrin McEvoy booked for the ride on the European import who has had just the one run down under when eighth over 1500m at Rosehill back in late June.

The Offer is followed in the Wyong Gold Cup field and weights by the Chris Waller-trained Beyond Thankful (58kg) who has drawn one wider out in 14 with Hugh Bowman riding, Bowman having ridden last year’s Wyong Cup third placegetter Secessio.

Sydney’s premier trainer Waller secured his fourth win in the Wyong Cup last year with Multilateral (2014) and so shoots for a fifth trophy on Friday.

This season he has just the one runner in Whipper six-year-old Beyond Thankful who won back-to-back races before a last start fourth to Magic Hurricane in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill last Saturday.

The only other two hopefuls weighted above the 54kg minimum are John Thompson’s import Orbec (55.5kg) drawn in gate two with Tye Angland riding and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Disclaimer ( who is also drawn well with barrier four.

Le Havre stallion Orbec debuted in Australia on August 15 running a nose away second from Beyond Thankful in the Premier’s Cup Prelude, a run he’ll be out to go one better stepping up to a more suitable distance with his longest distanced win being 2450m.

Disclaimer drops back from 56kg last time out in the Premier’s Cup under a week ago when running a well-beaten sixth, his last win being 12 months ago in last September’s Group 3 Newcastle Cup (2300m).

Along with The Offer there are two other last start winners in the Wyong Cup field with the Paul Perry-trained Newcastle galloper Ghost Protocol (barrier six) who took out the Taree Cup (2000m) on August 23 and Jeff Englebrecht’s local eight-year-old Bonus Spin (barrier eight).

A veteran of 63 starts, Bonus Spin won the Wyong Cup Prelude over 2080m on August 30 and will shot for back-to-back victories at the track and distance on Friday.

Other notable Wyong Gold Cup hopes this spring include Taree Cup runner-up Just As Cosmic who trainer Jason Coyle has Tommy Berry riding and Casino Prince mare Casino Dancer who ran second at the track on debut in 2013.
