2015 Melbourne Cup Nominations Feature 140 Stayers

Nominations for Melbourne Cup 2015 closed on Tuesday with Racing Victoria’s Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter revealing 140 early entries for the ‘race that stops a nation’ at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday, November 3.

Down eight nominees on last year’s number, the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) is the showcase race of the annual Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and this year the 140 entries include 31 international raiders.

“The quality of entries is outstanding,” Carpenter said.

2015 Melbourne Cup Nominations Feature:

  • 140 total nominations
  • 31 international entries
  • 4 for Aidan O’Brien who hasn’t had a starter since 2008
  • Last year’s winning trifecta of Protectionist, Red Cadeaux and Who Shot Thebarman
  • 2 10-year-olds with Red Cadeaux and Precedence
  • 2 Japanese-trained raiders including the favourite Fame Game
  • 10 for Chris Waller including his Sydney Cup quinella of Grand Marshal and Who Shot Thebarman

International gallopers have won three of the past five editions of the world’s richest handicap including last year when the then German-trained Protectionist (2014) enjoyed a runaway four length win in the two mile classic.

Four of the internationals in the mix this season come from the Irish base of Aidan O’Brien, who has saddled up five previous starters for one third over the years.

O’Brien’s 2015 Melbourne Cup hopes are: Kingfisher, Bondi Beach, Order Of St George and Fields Of Athenry.

The best fancied of his contingent is Kingfisher who ran second to Trip To Paris in the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup (4023m) two back.

Last year’s winning Melbourne Cup Trifecta are all also nominated again this year with the now Kris Lees-trained Protectionist, Ed Dunlop’s veteran 10-year-old Red Cadeaux who contests his fifth straight edition of the Cup and the Chris Waller-trained Who Shot Thebarman who ran second to stablemate Grand Marshal – also nominated for the Melbourne Cup – in the Sydney Cup over the 3200m in the autumn.

Red Cadeaux has run second in the Melbourne Cup three times including last year and is one of two 10-year-olds looking to set the record for the oldest Melbourne Cup winner along with Precedence.

Precedence is prepared by James Cummings, grandson and former co-trainer of the late great ‘Cups King’ Bart Cummings who sadly passed away aged 87 this week.

Cummings won an incredible 12 Melbourne Cups, most recently in 2008 with Viewed, and will be listed as the trainer of Precedence should the stable stalwart gain a run in the 24-starter field this year.

Along with Red Cadeaux, Dunlop also has Manndawi and Ascot Gold Cup winner Trip To Paris nominated.

At the opposite end of the age scale Carpenter said the line-up of four-year-old Melbourne Cup hopes this year was outstanding, the last four-year-old to win being the Mark Kavanagh-trained Shocking (2009).

Some of the top four-year-olds in the mix include: Mongolian Khan, Preferment, Gust Of Wind, Set Square and Winx.

The shortest priced of those in futures Melbourne Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Kiwi Mongolian Khan who travelled to Sydney during the autumn and won the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) last time out.

Waller’s Zabeel stallion Preferment (2014 Victoria Derby), Gust Of Wind (2015 ATC Oaks), Set Square (2014 VRC Oaks) and Waller’s daughter of Street Cry Winx (2015 QLD Oaks) are all also Group 1 winners as three-year-olds.

Heading the all-in Melbourne Cup betting is Japan’s Fame Game, the Yoshitada Munakata-trained six-year-old out to become the fifth of that age to win the Melbourne Cup since 2010.

Along with the son of Heart’s Cry whose last start was a second to Gold Ship in the Group 1 Tenno Sho (3200m) in May, Japan is represented in the Melbourne Cup nominations by Hokko Brave.

Other early favourites in the Melbourne Cup markets include: the John O’Shea-trained The BMW winner Hartnell, William Mullins’ Irish raider Max Dynamite and the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Hardwicke Stakes winner Snow Sky.

Notable omissions meanwhile include Contributer, Almandine and Last Impact.

First Melbourne Cup acceptances close on October 6 followed by second declarations on October 26 before the 2015 Melbourne Cup final field is announced live after the racing action at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, Saturday October 31.
