Tulloch Lodge trainer Gai Waterhouse dominates the Furious Stakes 2015 nominations for the fillies’ feature at Randwick Racecourse this weekend with four livewire chances in the Chelmsford Stakes Day support act.
A key lead-up for three-year-old fillies that could be heading towards the $500,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) back at the track in early October, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) has attracted 15 nominations.
Four of those are prepared by Waterhouse including the highest-rated entry English who is set to return in the set weights Sydney Spring Racing Carnival clash.
Encosta De Lago filly English has already won over $800,000 in prize money in her four starts that included a Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) win at this same track and distance and a second to stablemate Vancouver in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill.
The next highest rated Furious Stakes nomination also comes from the Waterhouse contingent with Speak Fondly coming off a first-up win in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) from August 22.
That was the Northern Meteor filly’s second Group 2 success following a Magic Night Stakes win back in mid-March before her Slipper failure (11th) in the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.
Runner-up to Speak Fondly in the Silver Shadow was the fellow Waterhouse-trained Kimberley Star who won her three lead-up runs in Sydney before that, the daughter of Star Witness to take on her last start conqueror again this weekend.
Waterhouse’s final Furious Stakes entry is then Sempre Libera whose last run was a fifth in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes (1200m) in Doomben during the winter.
Adding another level of intrigue into this year’s Furious Stakes is the nomination of the undefeated Ciaron Maher-trained Petits Filous.
A winner of all three of her starts so far the Street Boss filly’s latest effort saw her step up to black-type company for the first time at Caulfield on August 15 to win the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) ahead of her possible Sydney debut in the Furious.
Maher has also nominated fellow Melbourne raider Jameka who won the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) over the boys at Flemington in mid-March.
Also coming off a win include the returning John O’Shea-trained Exceed And Excel filly Ottoman who won the Group 3 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) in the wet on April 11 during The Championships, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock Serene Majesty who broke her maiden status at Canterbury on August 12 by over five lengths and fellow Canterbury winner Tempt Me Not for James Cummings.
Other notable Furious Stakes nominations include the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel filly Fireworks after her first win since January’s Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m), Clarry Conners’ Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Look To The Stars whose last run was a third to Press Statement in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) and Lake Geneva for Team Hawkes.
Third in both the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne and Sydney’s Golden Slipper last campaign, Lake Geneva won first-up at Hawkesbury over 1000m before another third this time behind Waterhouse’s quinella in the Silver Shadow.
