Contributer Tops 2015 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes Nominations

Godolphin’s returning autumn star Contributer is the top-rated nominee for Saturday’s Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes 2015 at Moonee Valley Racecourse with the John O’Shea-trained galloper kicking off his Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival campaign in the weight-for-age feature.

Nominations for this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) have been extended until 10am (AEST) on Tuesday after Racing Victoria took 14 early entries.

Six-year-old High Chaparral stallion Contributer is one of the genuine headliners having won the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) – Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) double in Sydney during the autumn.

He hasn’t raced at Moonee Valley before and his last Melbourne run was an eighth in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington last November.

He does however boast an outstanding first-up record of five wins from six resuming runs and should be flying fresh off two Randwick trials in August when he begins his campaign targeting the $3 million Group 1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) back at the Valley on October 24.

Last year’s Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner The Cleaner is nominated to defend his title, Mick Burles’ ace Tasmanian galloper having won second-up last September defeating Mourinho.

He will be second-up again on Saturday if accepted, his returning run a very smart second to last year’s Dato’ runner-up when just run down in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 15.

Currently prepared by  Darryl Blackshaw as fellow Moe-based trainer Peter Gelagotis serves the last week of his suspension, veteran eight-year-old Oratorio gelding Mourinho is also back this year looking to go one better in the Dato’ on the back of his narrow PB Lawrence win.

He has been to Moonee Valley 11 previous times for an impressive five wins, two seconds and a third but is yet to win over the mile despite five attempts in the past.

The only other last start winner nominated for this year’s Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes is the Robert Hickmott-trained import The United States, a six-year-old son of Galileo who won over 1500m at Moonee Valley on August 22 at just his fourth run down under.

Also coming off nice lead-ups into the Melbourne feature this weekend are the likes of PB Lawrence Stakes third placed Hong Kong import Dibayani for David Hayes & Tom Dabernig, fourth in the same lead-up race Big Memory and the Peter Moody-trained Kenjorwood who ran a close fourth to The United States here beaten under a length a fortnight ago.

Sydney’s top trainer Chris Waller, who has a stranglehold over the Chelmsford Stakes Day meeting back home on Saturday, also has a trio of Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes nominees.

Waller’s possible runners are his 2013 Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur who is also nominated for the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, 10-year-old Doomben Cup third placegetter I’m Imposing and Rosehill Guineas runner-up Preferment making his four-year-old debut if accepted.
