2015 Memsie Stakes Winner Boban Salutes for Punters

After running fifth as the beaten favourite last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the always honest Chris Waller-trained Boban returned in the Memsie Stakes 2015 and this time dug deep for a gutsy late win in the weight-for-age Caulfield classic.

Saluting in his incredible fifth Group 1, the determined Bernardini six-year-old knew exactly where the finishing line was and put in his all in the final couple of metres to take out the $400,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) with Glyn Schofield in the saddle.

Schofield has a terrific association with the great horse having ridden the champion to all of his elite level victories with wins in the 2013 Epsom Handicap, 2013 Emirates Stakes, 2014 Chipping Norton Stakes, 2015 Doomben 10,000 first-up last campaign and now the Memsie.

The returning Team Hawkes-trained Entirely Platinum was one of the first to jump out the barriers in the season’s opening Group 1 clash taking up the lead ahead of Regal Roller Stakes winner Setinum.

Eventual last-past-the-post Temple Of Boom settled third just ahead of the promising Darren Weir-trained Stratum four-year-old Startum Star who gained a run as the first emergency following the scratching of Fawkner.

By the 400m the Peter Moody-trained Hi World had moved up to fourth while Boban was tracking around sixth, Schofield taking his time as Waller’s other starter Weary fought to get into the race on the outside having missed the kick to settle back second last.

On the straight Startum Star started to come for the frontrunners while Boban worked his way up the inside hard on the fence.

In a close Memsie Stakes result it was Boban ($6) on the inside who got there by a nose thanks to a brilliant ride from Schofield ahead of Entirely Platinum ($9.50) with the fast finishing Stratum Star ($9) in third.

Boban never looked like he was going to win until the very end, the remarkable horse continuing his ace record and association with Schofield.

“He’s a simple horse,” Schofield said post-win.

“Chris has done a fantastic job, it was a super ride today.

“The last 100m, he lifted and saw the winning post and wanted to get there.

“A fantastic effort.

“He’s not at his best on the shifty ground…it just shows what a top horse he is.”

Also pleased with the Memsie Stakes win was Waller’s stable representative Justine Hales who also praised Schofield’s sneaky ride on the rails.

“He snuck up the rails and was lucky they all peeled off,” she noted.

“It took him (Boban) a while to work into it on the straight.

“He’s got a big heart and a will to win, he’s very tough and he tries and gives his all all the time.”

Waller is likely to have a well-prepped plan in place for Boban next run, Hales confirming the horse was heading back to Sydney on Sunday with a good space between starts the key to his success.

“He’s heading back to Rosehill tomorrow night,” she said.

“Waller will have a plan set for him.

“It is best to space his runs out.”

Boban holds a nomination for the $1 million Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on October 3, a race Waller has won the past two editions of.

Two years ago Boban (2013) took it out before He’s Your Man (2014) won last year’s edition.

Whether Boban defends his title is yet to be seen, another possible target before Epsom Day then being the $500,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 19.
