In a small field and wide open betting market, narrow favourite to take out Sydney’s Premier’s Cup 2015 at Rosehill Gardens this weekend is the in-form John O’Shea-trained stayer Magic Hurricane.
Godolphin’s Hurricane Run six-year-old is one of just eight accepted gallopers to face off in Rosehill Race 4 on Saturday when the $100,000 Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) jumps at 2:30pm (AEST).
Drawn nicely midfield in barrier four with Sam Clipperton to ride on the 54kg minimum, the lightly-race import has just his 14th career start and comes off a nice third to Centre Pivot in the Spring Preview (1400m) at the track a fortnight ago.
All but three in the field are at single figures to win this weekend including the black type winning market mover Silverball ($4) for Chris Waller and Winter Cup winner Kapour ($4.40) drawn well in gate two for his first run since a second in the Listed Grafton cup (2350m) in early July.
Premier’s Cup Prelude winner Beyond Thankful ($5.50) shooting for three straight wins and Tommy Berry’s ride Spurtonic ($7.50) then round out the top fancies in the markets.
So will the best in betting salute for the punters or is there an upset Premier’s Cup result on the cards?
#4 Silverball ($4)
Waller’s French import should win this if Tye Angland gives the seven-year-old the right run, the horse stripping fitter than his first-up appearance in the Spring Preview a fortnight ago where he was still carrying plenty of weight. Won the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) at this track back in May giving him a good Rosehill record (3-1-1-0), and never really runs a bad race. Carried 59kg in his resuming run and drops a kilo here. Is consistent and the money is coming for him in the market.
#7 Magic Hurricane ($3.20)
Race favourite is deserving of his short price in the markets based on the solid lead-up into this feature. Gets a good run from the barrier with a nice weight, the same kilos and hoop he had on his back last start when third in the Spring Preview. Extra distance will suit as he has winning form up to 2400m, and he will also benefit from having had his first Rosehill run. Nice late sectionals in that race and so could be hard to beat finishing off well again here.
#1 Beyond Thankful ($5.50)
Equal 58.5kg top weight, Hugh Bowman rides Waller’s other runner. The Whipper six-year-old comes off back-to-back wins firstly at Canterbury over 1900m and then taking out the Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m) two weeks ago. Had a kilo more on his back that day and is in excellent form for this assignment. Gets things his way from the gate so no surprise if he salutes at the track and distance again.
