This weekend a top line-up of classy mares face off in the Cockram Stakes 2015, betting tips for the Caulfield clash on Memsie Stakes Day found below.
There is a capacity field of 16 mares plus one emergency accepted for the $150,000 Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m), known this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival as the William Hill Sprint Series Heat 1 Stakes.
Jumping as Caulfield Race 7 at 4:05pm (AEST), the current Cockram Stakes betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are led by the only galloper as yet not assured of a run with the emergency Vezalay paying $3.50.
The bookies are taking no chances with the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Shamardal four-year-old who has won her only previous Caulfield run when beating More Radiant home by a length here over 1100m a fortnight ago.
For those guaranteed a start on Saturday, the best fancied in the Cockram Stakes markets at $4.60 is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour.
Drawn in gate nine with Kerrin McEvoy to ride, the returning daughter of Northern Meteor shoots for her first win since posting an elite level victory at Randwick in early March’s Canterbury Stakes (1300m).
She has trialled well this month including a win over 1250m at Randwick over Bohemian Lily and has a 50% strike rate first-up.
The next best in betting are then the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained six-year-old Girl Guide ($6), Hazard ($8.50) with the outside alley to overcome and market mover Griante who has been smashed by the punters early backed in from $15 to $8.50.
So do the bookies have it right or is there an upset Cockram Stakes result on the agenda from a double figure hopeful such as returning Tressady Stakes winner Madam Gangster ($12) or the Mick Price-trained four-year-old More Radiant ($11)?
#4 Griante ($8.50)
Big money coming this David Brideoake-trained Good Journey five-year-old who shoots for her first win since the Group 3 Wenona Girl Handicap (1200m) in Sydney in March. After that she rose in class and caught the eye when crossing under two lengths away third to Lucky Hussler in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, and then returned to Randwick for a Group 2 Sapphire Stakes second. Her first-up run at Caulfield left room for improvement when ninth to Setinum in the Regal Roller, but she was beaten only 2.3 lengths and she will be fitter for the run. Has a wide gate for Saturday, but the class to overcome and shouldn’t be discounted.
#10 Jessy Belle ($15)
Double figure hope with plenty of claims, Luke Oliver’s Rock Of Gibraltar mare has a solid Caulfield record (6-1-2-1) and has won her past two starts. Both wins were over 1400m at Flemington, the latest of which saw her carry 58kg to victory. Saturday is a rise in class but drop in distance, so how she handles the shorter run will be key to her chances of making it a hat-trick. The 55kg and barrier six will help.
#1 Cosmic Endeavour ($4.60)
Class horse in the field and even with the 59kg could prove the one to beat on race day from barrier nine with McEvoy aboard for the ride. Returns here and has won two of her previous four first-up assignments, and looked good with a winning trial on August 10 over 1250m. Caulfield track and Melbourne way of racing are the test along with the weight, but as a Group 1 winner she’s a big hope.
