Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A talented and capacity field of mares will line up for Saturday’s Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse; offering punters exceptional value for money from a betting perspective and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Vezalay is not yet a confirmed starter on Saturday after figuring as the Cockram Stakes’ first emergency runner, but the four-year-old has interestingly opened as and maintained status as outright favourite in betting markets at a quote of $3.50 with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
Posting two wins and as many minors through only four career starts so far, the Shamardal mare was a consistent performer for Leon and Troy Corstens through the Autumn Carnival; running fifth in the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) and third in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) most notably.
Returning to the paddock after a credible performance for eighth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 27th, Vezalay returned to time for success in the Beveridge Williams Plate (1100m) a fortnight ago and will be partnered by Michael Rodd should she gain entry into the Cockram Stakes field.
Two-time Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour is yet to herald much interest in 2015 Cockram Stakes betting markets but remains sole occupant of the second line at a quote of $5 for success.
Ending a strong 2014 campaign with success in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) in Brisbane, Cosmic Endeavour returned this year for fourth in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m); progressing to second in the Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) before taking out the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 7th.
Having trialled well in the lead-up to her competitive return, the Northern Meteor mare has been charged with carrying a race-high 59kgs and may need some luck in running from barrier 9.
Girl Guide won the 2014 edition of the Cockram Stakes and is rated something of a chance to successfully defend her title on Saturday at current $5.50 odds.
Continuing to impress following her Cockram Stakes success, Girl Guide finishing second in each of the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) before running a pleasing sixth in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on November 1st.
While unable to make much of a competitive impact through four autumn starts, the Churchill Downs mare is sure to be offered a gem of a ride from Dwayne Dunn and will leave from the central barrier 8.
Godolphin runner Hazard ($8.50) and consistent performer Madam Gangster ($9.50) interestingly figure as the only other runners currently available at Cockram Stakes odds of less-than $10, while market mover Griante offers incredible value for money at a quote of $11.
