Cosmic Endeavour Heads 2015 Cockram Stakes Field

A quality field of older mares in the Cockram Stakes 2015 at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend in Melbourne is headlined by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Cosmic Endeavour who returns to racing on Saturday.

Avoiding a clash with a host of Group 1 stars including Boban and Temple Of Boom in the season’s opening Group 1, instead of the Memsie Stakes on Saturday Waterhouse runs her Northern Meteor mare Cosmic Endeavour in the $150,000 Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m).

Run this year as the William Hill Sprint Series Heat 1 Stakes at 4:05pm (AEST) jumping as Caulfield Race 7 on the Memsie Stakes Day card, the Cockram Stakes is the first assignment of the spring for Cosmic Endeavour who hasn’t won since her Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) success at Randwick in early March.

Her last start produced a fifth to stablemate Amanpour in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on April 11, and Saturday is her first run in Melbourne since October of 2013.

Cosmic Endeavour is drawn in barrier nine in the full 16 starter field that also features an emergency runner in Leon & Troy Corstens’ last start winner at the track Vezalay.

Other notable Cockram Stakes hopes along with Cosmic Endeavour who kick off their spring campaigns in the set weights plus penalties clash include the Darren Weir-trained May’s Dream and Hazard for Lee & Anthony Freedman.

Winner of last year’s Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) in Adelaide, New Approach mare May’s Dream was disappointing first-up at Sandown-Hillside when 11th to Smackdown over 1200m, an effort she’s out to improve on her.

Hazard will be looking to build on a strong first-up record (7-3-1-1) when Ben Melham rides the daughter of Flying Spur from her awkward barrier (17), the six-year-old boasting three previous wins at Caulfield.

Her winter campaign was a strong one and was headlined by a victory over Catkins in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) at Doomben in June before her seventh to Srikandi in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) last time out at the Gold Coast.

For those boasting a lead-up run this time in and the fitness edge some of the best Cockram Stakes hopes include the Luke Oliver-trained Jessy Belle shooting for her third win on the trot who comes off a 1400m win at Flemington on Finals Day, four-year-old More Radiant for Mick Price and Jason Warren’s six-year-old daughter of Dubleo Double Dee who won at Sandown at the start of the month.
