Taiyoo Tops 2015 Slickpix Stakes Nominations

Darren Weir’s genuine stayer Taiyoo is the highest rated of the Slickpix Stakes 2015 nominations taken for the Caulfield black-type running this weekend in the opening Group 1 race meet of the season.

One of the support acts of Memsie Stakes Day, this year’s $120,000 Listed Slickpix Stakes (1700m) has attracted a large number of nominees with 24 early entries for the handicap clash.

Heading the nominations ratings-wise, Haradasun six-year-old Taiyoo enjoyed a strong autumn in Adelaide winning the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) in late February before a second to Tanby in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) over the two miles in March.

His latest run was a first-up effort at Caulfield when seventh to Mourinho in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago, an effort he’s sure to improve on when stepped up to a more suitable distance on Saturday back at the track.

Weir has also nominated for his imported South African expat Dylan’s Promise, the six-year-old mare having debuted down under at the start of the month when well beaten over 1400m at Flemington.

Following Taiyoo in the Slickpix Stakes ratings are the likes of the Tony McEvoy-trained Big Memory, Lindsay Park’s veteran nine-year-old Extra Zero and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Excess Knowledge.

Duke Of Marmalade gelding Big Memory is second-up this weekend after a brave fourth, beaten under two lengths, in the PB Lawrence Stakes.

While the six-year-old is yet to win second-up, he does boast three placings from five previous runs second-up so will be a livewire chance if accepted.

Extra Zero may be a rising 10-year-old but the Danzero warhorse is still racing in top form.

His autumn included a second to Spillway in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington and he comes off a resuming run over 1400m when runner-up to Charmed Harmony from August 8.

David Hayes & Tom Dabernig have a total of three Slickpix Stakes nominees with Extra Zero joined by the imported Bold Sniper who is yet to race in Australia having last been seen running third over 2400m at Doncaster last September and Galileo seven-year-old Pacific Heights who ran second over 1800m at the track two weeks ago.

Yet another import, Waterhouse’s Excess Knowledge won two on the trot last campaign before he ran fifth in the Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield last time out beaten only 1.95 lengths in his first run at the track.

Running first-up if accepted this Saturday, Matt Laurie’s Mornington-based Casino Prince gelding Escado is another exciting Slickpix hopeful.

Runner-up in the Caloundra Cup over the mile and a half in May, his last start was a Group 3 win over 2400m at the Gold Coast and he comes off two nice Cranbourne trials this month including a victory over Moonovermanhattan in the mud on August 21.

Other notable Slickpix Stakes nominees include the Ciaron Maher-trained Winter Cup winner and Grafton Cup runner-up Kapour, Team Hawkes’ Redoute’s Choice mare La Amistad last seen winning over the two miles at Flemington on May 23 and Let’s Make Adeal whose last start was a close fourth in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m).

The Slickpix Stakes 2015 field and barriers are out on Wednesday morning so stay tuned.
