Flamberge Heads 2015 The Heath 1100 Stakes Nominations

A winner of eight of his 27 starts to date including last year’s edition of the same Caulfield showdown, this weekend Exceed And Excel six-year-old Flamberge is entered to defend his title in the $150,000 Group 3 The Heath 1100 Stakes (1100m).

A bumper 21 sprinters make up the early entries for the set weights plus penalties clash including Flamberge who, if accepted, will shoot for his fourth first-up win from six resuming runs.

He was last seen winning the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide in mid-May, which was the gelding’s first win since a one and a half-length victory over Rifleman in last year’s The Heath 1100m.

Moody has also nominated for his Exceed And Excel five-year-old Thermal Current whose last win was also at Morphettville, the gelding winning the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) before a nice fifth when beaten under two lengths by his stablemate in The Goodwood.

There are a number of other last start winners along with Flamberge nominated for The Heath 1100 this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival including the in-form Luke Oliver-trained local mare Jessy Belle who comes off back-to-back winter wins at Flemington, fellow in-form mare Miss Promiscuity and The Bowler.

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Magnus mare Miss Promiscuity comes off a victory at the same track and distance as Saturday’s clash, the five-year-old having put an easy two and three quarter lengths on Angels Beach to take out the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) on July 4 from the outside barrier (12 of 12).

Lindsay Park’s Hayes & Dabernig also have Fastnet Rock gelding Fast ‘N’ Rocking in The Heath mix, the Group 1 performer coming off a first-up fifth to Setinum in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield a fortnight ago.

As for The Bowler, Robert Smerdon’s Testa Rossa gelding hasn’t raced since posting his fourth win from five starts in Adelaide’s Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) over the Morphettville mile on May 16.

He has had four previous Caulfield runs, but is yet to win at his home track where he hasn’t raced since April last year.

Peter & Paul Snowden also have The Heath pencilled in as the returning race for their Lonhro mare Bounding, a winner of seven of her 14 starts to date.

Boasting an additional six second place finishes, the five-year-old has finished out of the top two just once before and was last seen running second to Vain Queen in the Group 3 GH Mumm Stakes (1100m) at Flemington during last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.

After missing the autumn, Bounding looks set for a good spring again having twice trialled nicely at Rosehill leading up to Saturday including a 1030m win over Group 1 champion Happy Galaxy on August 17.

Other notable The Heath 1100 Stakes nominees include David Brideoake’s William Reid Stakes third placegetter from March Griante, the returning Miss Steele who ran a nice fourth to Miracles Of Life in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide in early May and the exciting Rich Enuff.

Winner of three straight Melbourne features last spring including the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington and the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), the Written Tycoon stallion was runner-up to Shooting To Win in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) over the mile before a disappointing seventh behind Brazen Beau in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) when dropped back to a sprint distance to see out his campaign.

The now four-year-old runs first-up this weekend on the back of two winning Cranbourne trials over 800m this month, and his trainer Ken Keys is confident he has come back in good order.
