Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
This weekend in Sydney the premier race on the Royal Randwick card is the 2015 Warwick Stakes, betting tips for the weight-for-age feature found below.
The $250,000 Group 2 Pro-Ride Warwick Stakes (1400m) features a strong final field of 14 hopefuls, the favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au at a current quote of $2.90 being John Thompson’s Flight Stakes winner First Seal.
The now four-year-old mare is drawn nicely in gate six with Tommy Berry riding, First Seal first-up on the weekend having last been seen backing up from two straight Group 1 seconds with a sixth in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes over the Randwick mile in April.
There’s a host of other single figure hopes in the Warwick Stakes odds this spring including Chris Waller’s returning Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec ($6.50), his former ATC Oaks winning stablemate Royal Descent ($7) who is an early market mover and It’s Somewhat ($7.50).
So will the firming favourite salute for the punters? Can Waller win it with one of his six hopefuls? Or is there an upset Warwick Stakes result on the agenda from a longer priced hopeful such as Gai Waterhouse’s Doomben Cup champ Pornichet ($9.50)?
#12 Royal Descent ($7)
It has been a long time between drinks for Waller’s now six-year-old daughter of Redoute’s Choice, but it is about time she broke the drought and won her first race since the 2013 Australian Oaks. She’s been a super consistent runner in top company over the past few seasons including her third in both the George Ryder Stakes and Doncaster Mile last prep. Weight-for-age suits, she always runs well at Randwick, goes well fresh and comes off a winning Rosehill trial. Ticks plenty of boxes and think it is worth following the money trial here.
#13 First Seal ($2.90)
Lots to like about Thompson’s first-up favourite, but under $3 looks a little short to take her for the win. The four-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock will get a gun run from the gate with big race specialist Berry in the saddle. She was in flying form in the autumn and has a top record at the track (5-2-2-0). The 1400m also looks ideal (3-2-1-0) so she’ll be finishing in the money for sure, but whether she’s got the edge to win just yet remains to be seen in this open race.
#5 Burbero ($8.50)
Plenty of livewire chances to fill the minor placings, but something appeals about Bjorn Baker’s O’Reilly seven-year-old who has won three from nine at Randwick. He’ll have the fitness edge on a few of these coming into the race third-up after two top two runs including his nice Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) win at the track over Weary on August 8. The step up to 1400m shouldn’t present a problem third-up as he has winning form up to 1600m and will love barrier four.
