Le Bonsir Ready to Hit The Line in Carlyon Stakes

Le Bonsir returned to racing for a credible third in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) a fortnight ago, and trainer Mick Price is pleased with the popular gelding’s condition ahead of Saturday’s Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.

Le Bonsir has been a strong and consistent performer for Price since first appearing on course competitively in 2011 and has returned to racing this year in typically good form; running fifth in the All Victorian Sprint Series Heat (1100m) first-up on May 9th before running a close second to Lumosty in the Listed Straight Six (1200m).

Returning to the paddock for a brief freshen-up after failing to figure in the Golden Topaz (1200m) on June 5th, Price told Racing Ahead Saturday’s Carlyon Stakes is actually being used as a stepping stone by the Choisir gelding on his way to the Listed Drummond Stakes (1200m) at the Valley in a fortnight.

“He’s a great old stable favourite who’s won nearly half a million,” Price said.

“This is a run in between runs and I wouldn’t think he’s a 1000m horse but we’ll probably just have to ride him off the speed. He’s a good beginner but he doesn’t needed to be hunted up in that sort of race.

“There’s a 1200m in two weeks’ time for him so it’s a run between runs but he’s in beautiful order and he’ll be hitting the line as best he can.”

Posting eight wins and fourteen minors through 37 career starts so far, Le Bonsir was a standout for Price through the 2013 Spring Carnival; winning the Drummond Golf Stakes, finishing fourth in the Listed Heading Out Hair And Beauty Stakes (1200m) and third in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) most notably.

Returning in 2014 in similarly competitive form, the gelding out of La Bella Dame ran second in the Straight Six; progressing to second in each of the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) and Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Final (1200m) but failed to fire when beating only one runner home in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m).
