Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Carlyon Stakes 2015 is one of two Moonee Valley black-types running in Melbourne this Saturday, betting tips and the latest odds on the short distance sprint found below.
Set to run as Moonee Valley Race 7 at 4:00pm (AEST), this year’s $120,000 Listed 1PRINT Carlyon Stakes (1000m) features a final field of 13 sprinters, the firming favourite of which is Gregers at $2.15 in from $3.10.
Despite a wide barrier 11 draw, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Commands mare is the clear pick to win this weekend and add to her impressive first-up record of three wins and a second from five previous runs when resuming.
Runner-up in Adelaide’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in early May, Gregers was last seen running sixth to Flamberge in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) a fortnight after that also run at Morphettville.
She is back in Melbourne though this spring and her Moonee Valley record heading into Saturday is very, very good with three wins and two seconds from six previous starts at the track.
Following the short-priced favourite in the current Carlyon Stakes betting markets are just two other single figure hopes with the Phillip Stokes-trained California Dane four-year-old Éclair Choice ($4.40) drawn a treat in barrier two and Fast Cash ($7.50) jumping from six with Craig Newitt in the saddle.
So will the first three in betting be the first three over the line on Saturday or is there an upset Carlyon Stakes result on the agenda from a longer priced hope in the markets such as the Peter Moody-trained Choisir stallion Il Cavallo ($11) or Mick Price’s veteran eight-year-old Le Bonsir ($12) who comes off a third to Shiraz in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington from August 8?
#3 Éclair Choice ($4.40)
Adelaide visitor Éclair Choice is first-up here and has a strong record when resuming (4-2-1-0) that the four-year-old will be looking to build on this weekend. The distance looks ideal as he boasts two wins and a second from four previous runs over the 1000m and with the ace barrier two draw and a winning lead-up trial back home of the distance defeating Australian Guineas runner-up Alpine Eagle this horse is still a nice price for the win, and will be hard to hold out.
#5 Our Nkwazi ($26)
Adding lots of value to the Carlyon Stakes quinella is this double figure hope who has the wide barrier 12 of 13 draw, but a nice lead-up win at the track with the Shawn Mathrick-trained veteran nine-year-old holding on by a nose to beat home Hard Romp on August 1 over the 1000m here. That was his second win from four starts over the distance at Moonee Valley, and Saturday is his 53rd career start making him an evergreen warhorse to watch out for at huge odds.
#1 Gregers ($2.15)
She is just that little bit too short to take for the win, but no doubt Gregers will present a big danger when she kicks off her spring from barrier 11 with Craig Williams in the saddle on Saturday. She is the market mover with a solid first-up record (5-3-1-0), but it has been a while between drinks for her with her latest victory being in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in August last year.
