John O’Shea’s returning galloper Vashka leads betting on the last black-type at Royal Randwick this Saturday opening favourite to win the 2015 Show County Quality on Warwick Stakes Day.
Due to jump as Randwick Race 7 at 4:20pm (AEST) there are nine left in the field for this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) with a stablemate of the favourite Complacent scratched to run in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at the meeting instead.
Drawn on the rails in barrier one with top Sydney-based hoop Tommy Berry booked for the ride, Vashka hasn’t raced since finishing a distant 10th to Our Boy Malachi in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at the track back in April.
Before that the now five-year-old Exceed And Excel won five on the trot in Sydney, his latest victory being over 1350m at Rosehill at the start of January.
Leading up to his return the gelding, who sits top of the Show County Quality odds at $3 having been backed in from $3.20 through Ladbrokes.com.au, has won back-to-back trials including at Randwick on August 10 defeating Hartnell by a length and this weekend he chases his seventh win at start number 13.
Close second favourite in Show County Quality betting at $3.80 is then the in-form Gai Waterhouse-trained Countryman, a five-year-old son of Royal Academy who backs up on a seven day turnaround after finishing second to Centre Pivot in the Spring Preview (1400m) last weekend at Rosehill.
He jumped from gate seven of eight with Tim Clark aboard on 54.5kg last Saturday and is wide again in eight with Danny Beasley taking over on the weekend.
Occupying the third line of betting at $5 is then Boss Lane in gate three shooting for a hat-trick of consecutive wins.
Ron Quinton’s Dubawi five-year-old at Canterbury defeating Kristy Lee two back in the wet then handled a firm track at Randwick on August 8 for a quarter length win carrying 59kg to victory over 1000m.
He is back up in distance this weekend but drops notably in weight to 54.5kg making him a strong lightweight chance.
The other single figure fancies are the Chris Waller-trained Group 3 winner Heart Testa ($8) who is now the 58kg top weight and Shamardal eight-year-old Aomen ($9) who is first-up with Glen Boss in the saddle on 57.5kg.
