Scone trainer Rodney Northam hopes to pick up a black-type win in Saturday’s Toy Show Quality 2015 with his soon-to-retire mare Myamira on Warwick Stakes Day at Royal Randwick.
Northam saddles-up two hopefuls in two states this weekend with his returning Group 1 placed colt Odyssey Moon running in the $120,000 Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Melbourne’s Moonee Valley Racecourse and his stud-bound mare Myamira taking on some quality types in the $125,000 Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) in Sydney.
Robert Thompson has the ride on seven-year-old Beautiful Crown mare Myamira this weekend, who returns to racing for the first time since crossing sixth to Mamwaazel in the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Gosford back in early January.
A winner of seven of her 39 starts, Myamira has a date in the breeding barn after this campaign and Northam is looking to pick up some late career stakes success with her to add to her value as a broodmare.
“She’ll be going to stud this year but we thought we might just try and send her out on a winning note and give her a couple of runs during the spring and see if we can pick something up,” Northam told AAP ahead of Myamira’s attempt to break a drought going back over 12 months.
“Her work has been as good as ever and her trackwork rider says she feels as good as ever.”
The current Toy Show Quality odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are led by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Echo Gal ($3.60) coming off a 1200m win at the track from August 8.
Myamira is the $34 roughie shot of the field drawn in barrier five for her first-up run, with her other most notable rivals in a tight market being the Chris Waller-trained stablemates Wine Tales ($4.80) and Amicus ($5).
As for Odyssey Moon in Melbourne, the three-year-old son of Snitzel hasn’t run since a sixth to early 2015 Thousand Guineas fancy Pasadena Girl in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 18.
A fortnight earlier he was more competitive over less distance when racking up an elite level placing running second behind the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
He comes off a third in a 1045m Randwick hit-out from August 10 into the McKenzie Stakes, and is currently installed as the equal $4.40 favourite to win on the weekend with Moody’s super consistent Artie Schiller El Greco who is yet to finish out of the top two in five career starts.
Northam is pleased with how Odyssey Moon has come on this time in following his strong gallop at Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning, and rates his chances on Saturday despite a wide draw.
“He worked well and I’m looking forward to Saturday,” he said.
