‘Soft’ First-up Option Ideal for Spy Decoder

Spy Decoder has not been seen at the races since failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) on March 28th, but trainer Anthony Cummings is confident the gelding is capable of first-up success in the Mostyn Copper Group BM84 (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Spy Decoder has been a largely strong and consistent performer for Cumming since first appearing on course for second in the Pro Ali Design Maiden (1200m) in early 2014; posting three wins and four minors from a total fifteen career starts.

Having performed well in three first-up performances prior without breaking through for a win, Cummings told Racing Ahead he is confident the conditions of Saturday’s Randwick race offer the son of Testa Rossa his best chance of breaking the hoodoo once and for all.

“He’s promised a lot and run some pretty nice races in good company,” Cummings said.

“He hasn’t always given us what we’re after on race day but certainly looking for him to live up to that promise this preparation.

“He’s a mature horse now and I’m really pleased with his work; he’s certainly quite strong and he has quite a barrel on him now.

“I think this is the best first-up opportunity so far in his career, so hopefully he can break the duck.”

Producing several commendable results for the Cummings camp through the 2014 Spring Carnival, Spy Decoder ran second in the TAB Rewards BM85 (1400m) at Randwick on September 6th, and while unable to make much of an impact in his next two starts, responded well in taking out the Inglis Plate (1400m) and placing second in the Lavazza Short Black (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day.

Running a credible third in the Dodo BM80 (1200m) first-up this year, Spy Decoder appeared to be building to the task when fifth in the talent-rich Hyland Race Colours BM80 (1600m) and fourth in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m), but returned to the paddock following his hapless run in the Doncaster Prelude.
