Riziz Leads 2015 Penny Edition Stakes Field

Ken Sweeney’s local veteran Riziz is the top rated acceptor for the feature race in Adelaide this weekend, the Penny Edition Stakes 2015 headlining the Morphettville Parks card on Saturday.

Set to run as Race 7 at 4:18pm (local), this year’s $100,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) features a final field of nine hopefuls with Sweeney’s Zariz seven-year-old Riziz drawn in barrier two with Jamie Kah to ride.

Beaten odds-on favourite in the race last spring when runner-up to Justify That second-up off a Group 3 Spring Stakes win over 1200m at Morphettville, Riziz is looking to do one better in this season’s Penny Edition despite running fourth to Red Eclipse in the Spring Stakes this time in.

Last year’s Penny Edition Stakes winner Justify That defends his title on the weekend, Peter Moody’s now eight-year-old son of King Of Prussia having run seventh in the Spring Stakes in his 60th career start.

The Grant Young-trained seven-year-old Red Eclipse also backs up in the Penny Edition Stakes, the Red Dazzler gelding having won his past two on the trot.

The first was over 1250m in the wet at Morphettville Parks on August 1 before the one and a half-length victory in the Spring Stakes just a week later.

Jockey Jason Holder is back in the saddle after apprentice Sigrid Carr rode Red Eclipse in the Group 3, the galloper drawn nicely in barrier three shooting for the hat-trick.

Jumping one on his outside in barrier four with Shayne Cahill in the saddle is then the ultra-consistent Go Dreaming for Grant Kluske.

The Beautiful Crown six-year-old hasn’t raced since a win over 2500m at Morphettville in the Listed Port Adelaide Cup in mid-May, the 1400m on Saturday likely short of his best.

However Go Dreaming hasn’t finished out of the money since September last year with a host of impressive runs including winning four on the trot during his autumn campaign.

Also first-up after an impressive prep last time in is the Tony McEvoy-trained High Chaparral stallion Alpine Eagle.

Jumping from barrier seven with Matthew Neilson in the saddle, four-year-old Alpine Eagle won the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield in late February before a last start second to Wandjina in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington last start on March 7.

He trialled at Morphettville leading up to his return on August 7 in the wet and was second past the post behind the runaway hit-out winner Éclair Choice.

Another Group 1 performed Penny Edition Stakes runner is the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Bernardini mare Go Indy Go.

The now four-year-old comes off an eighth in the Spring Stakes she’ll be looking to improve on, which was her first run since crossing seventh to Set Square in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington last November.

Go Indy Go won the Group 3 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at this track in April last year before winning the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) over the Randwick mile in Sydney, which was her most recent turf triumph.
