The key support race on the Warwick Stakes Day line-up in Sydney this Saturday, the Silver Shadow Stakes 2015 has attracted a diminutive final field of only six three-year-old fillies.
A nice Royal Randwick lead-up for fillies heading towards the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors including the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield in October, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) is set to run as Race 4 at 2:25pm (AEST) on Saturday.
Of the six hopefuls the sure-to-be favourite in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kimberley Star drawn in gate six with Tim Clark to ride.
The flying daughter of Star Witness has won her past three starts on the trot including over 1400m at Rosehill on August 1 by a tidy three lengths.
She has had three previous Randwick runs for a win and a second place finish and while she’s yet to win over less than 1300m, her awesome form of late suggests she’ll be hard to beat here even over the 1200m.
Kimberley Star is a 2015 Thousand Guineas nominee and pays $26 in futures markets to win the mile showdown on Caulfield Guineas Day.
Waterhouse has also accepted for the rails-drawn Speak Fondly in Saturday’s Silver Shadow Stakes, Kerrin McEvoy to ride the daughter of Northern Meteor from barrier one.
She has had four starts so far including a second in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) in late February at Warwick Farm and a narrow win in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) in mid-March.
Her latest run was a disappointing 11th though when outclassed and beaten five lengths by star colt Vancouver in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) during the autumn, a run she’s tipped to improve on against easier rivals first-up this weekend off two nice Randwick trials.
Speak Fondly’s latest hit-out was over 840m on July 31 and she was second past the post behind Group 1 winner Temple Of Boom in a good lead-up into Saturday’s event.
Along with Kimberley Star there are two other last start winners in the Silver Shadow Stakes field with the Hawkes Racing-trained Lake Geneva and Peter & Paul Snowden’s Kangarilla Joy drawn in barriers three and four respectively.
Tommy Berry rides the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Fastnet Rock filly Lake Geneva who is yet to finish out of the money boasting a win, a second and three thirds from her five runs to date.
The classy youngster is a dual Group 1 placegetter in top company having finished third to Pride Of Dubai in the Blue Diamond Stakes in Melbourne and third in the Golden Slipper last season.
Her returning run this prep was also good with a 1.5 length win at Hawkesbury over 1000m on August 6 when she broke her maiden status ahead of the Group 3 on the weekend.
Kangarilla Joy has had just the one start for a Warwick Farm win over 1100m on August 5, the Lonhro filly showing all the signs of making a good Group type this campaign.
Rounding out the Silver Shadow Stakes field are then the returning Gerald Ryan-trained Fireworks (barrier two) who won the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) back in January and Godolphin’s Domesday filly Italy (barrier six) who is a Glen Boss mount.
