John Thompson’s last start Canterbury winner Dragon Flyer leads a wide open Rowley Mile 2015 betting market for Thursday’s feature race at Hawkesbury Racecourse.
Set to run as Hawkesbury Race 6 at 3:45pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed ILG XXXX Gold Hawkesbury Rowley Mile (1600m) features just eight final acceptors.
All but two of those are under double figures for the win in the latest Rowley Mile odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, the $3.90 favourite of which is Dragon Flyer drawn nicely barrier two with Kerrin McEvoy to ride.
A six-year-old son of Pendragon, the galloper comes off a 1550m win at Canterbury from August 12 that he won by nearly four lengths and has his second run at Hawkesbury after a third at the track on debut back in October of 2012.
After the favourite there’s a logjam of hopes very tight in the Rowley Mile betting markets including second fancy Rugged Cross ($4.80) for Chris Waller.
Winner of the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) in the wet at Rosehill three back, the imported Cape Cross seven-year-old then ran third in the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) on August 1 before a fourth at the same track just last Saturday behind Centre Pivot in the Spring Preview (1400m).
The next best in betting are then Gai Waterhouse’s 61kg top weight The Offer, winner of last year’s Sydney Cup over the two miles at Randwick, and Capania both paying $5.
Blake Shinn rides Waterhouse’s Montjeu seven-year-old The Offer who was last seen crossing eighth when carrying the same hefty kilos over 1800m at the Gold Coast on June 20.
Capania is on the 54kg minimum this week, Tommy Berry replacing McEvoy in the saddle of Garry Frazer’s locally-trained Dubai Destination mare who comes off a Rosehill win over 1900m from August 1.
Also at single figures are the rails-drawn Aussie Rules mare Footy Fan ($6) who comes off a fourth over 1400m at Rosehill behind Bring A Ring when beaten under a length on San Domenico Stakes Day (August 15) and the Terry Croft-trained local Lonhro gelding Vite Loni ($7.50).
Rounding out the markets are then Winona Costin’s mount Uncle Sugar ($15) coming off three top two runs on the trot from the winter and the $41 roughie of the field Color Purple in the outside alley.
