2015 Carlyon Stakes Field Feature Gregers

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained mare Gregers is the highest rated final acceptor for Saturday’s Carlyon Stakes 2015 field at Moonee Valley Racecourse.

The Commands five-year-old was runner-up in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide in early May before a sixth at the same Morphettville track last start behind Flamberge in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m).

She returns this weekend then in Melbourne wearing the number one saddlecloth in a 13-starter field for the $120,000 Listed 1PRTINT Carlyon Stakes (1000m), which is set to run as Moonee Valley Race 7 at 4:00pm (AEST).

Drawn awkwardly in barrier 11 for her returning spring run, Gregers has her regular rider Craig Williams back aboard as she shoots for her first win since the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield 12 months ago.

The next highest rated Carlyon Stakes hopes this weekend are the Mick Price-trained Le Bonsir racing second-up in barrier nine and veteran nine-year-old Our Nkwazi in the second widest gate (12).

Choisir eight-year-old Le Bonsir comes off a third behind Shiraz in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington from the start of the month when beaten under a length, jockey Damien Oliver replacing Dwayne Dunn in the saddle for Saturday’s assignment.

Our Nkwazi will have Ben Melham in the saddle shooting for back-to-back wins after Shawn Mathrick’s Arazi gelding won over 1000m at the track on August 1 defeating Hard Romp with the same hoop aboard.

Also coming off nice runs into the Carlyon Stakes are the likes of Mr Make Believe drawn well in barrier four who comes off a fourth to Our Nkwazi from August 1, the Peter Moody-trained Il Cavallo who Dunn rides following a third in the same lead-up race and Tansy in barrier three who has run top three in his three most recent starts.

Other notable Carlyon Stakes hopefuls include Phil Sweeney’s Bon Hoffa mare Sweet Emily with the inside alley who boast a 50% strike rate at Moonee Valley with three wins from six previous starts and the Phillip Stokes-trained Éclair Choice in gate two for Dom Tourneur.

Visiting Adelaide galloper Éclair Choice has a solid record to date (12-4-5-1) that the California Dane four-year-old will look to build on first-up this weekend, his latest run being a fifth to Nicoscene in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) back home in early May.
