Waller Dominates 2015 Warwick Stakes Nominations

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller dominates Saturday’s Warwick Stakes 2015 nominations at Randwick Racecourse with nine entries for the weight-for-age spring showdown.

A key lead-up for Group 1-bound milers this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the $250,000 Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) has attracted a total of 19 nominees.

Nine of those hail from the five-time Sydney Trainers’ Premiership winning stables of Waller including his Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec who could go all the way to the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in Melbourne this October.

Other options for the $2.2 million earning son of Teofilo including the George Main Stakes and Epsom Handicap in Sydney, as well as the Makybe Diva Stakes and Underwood Stakes over the mile in Melbourne should the Victorian races fail to attract a strong class of competitors this season.

Waller has a host of other Group 1 winners set to resume in the Warwick Stakes this year including his upset Sydney Cup champ Grand Marshal and former Oaks winning mare Royal Descent who was last seen running third to Criterion in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 11.

A now six-year-old daughter of Redoute’s Choice, Royal Descent runs first-up on the back of a smart winning trial at Rosehill on August 4 over 1030m where she defeated stablemates Beaten Up and Preferment who are both also nominated for the Warwick Stakes.

Rounding out Waller’s possible Warwick Stakes runners are Foreteller, Hawkspur, Moriarty and French import Weary who returned with a first-up second to Burbero in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on August 8.

Bjorn Baker’s Missile Stakes winning O’Reilly seven-year-old Burbero is also nominated for a Warwick Stakes run on Saturday.

The veteran sprinter has had two nice runs this time in and shoots for back-to-back wins at a track he has currently won three from nine on.

Baker has also nominated for the oldest horse in the mix, 10-year-old Zaratone who was last seen running a brave fourth when beaten just over a length by his stablemate in the Missile Stakes.

The only other nominee for the weekend not running first-up is then the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Messene, the Lonhro gelding having run fifth still only 1.6 lengths off the winner in the Missile Stakes – the form line likely to stack-up in the Warwick Stakes.

Other big name nominees in the mix include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Amanpour, stablemate Pornichet, Godolphin’s ultra-consistent Complacent and First Seal for John Thompson.

Waterhouse’s five-year-old Northern Meteor mare Amanpour races for the first time since winning the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) over the Randwick mile in April, while French import Pornichet also won at elite level last time out.

The Vespone stallion took out the Toowoomba Cup on May 2 before backing up just seven days later in Brisbane to beat home Weary in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).

Authorized five-year-old Complacent meanwhile hasn’t raced since November of 2013 when runner-up in the Victoria Derby on the back of a win in that year’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.

He returns from injury on Saturday, but is sure to be at long odds not having raced for nearly two years.

First Seal however last ran in April when sixth to Amanpour in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes, Thompson’s four-year-old Fastnet Rock mare having run second the start before behind Fenway in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) in late March at Rosehill.

See below for the full Warwick Stakes 2015 nominations, the final field and barriers for which are out on Wednesday morning.
