2015 Spring Cups Bid for Kirramosa

Thrilled with the first-up performance of his 2013 Crown Oaks winner Kirramosa, trainer John Sadler has confirmed a Spring Cups 2015 bid for the mare in Melbourne this season.

The horseman hopes to have his five-year-old daughter of Alamosa firing on all cylinders by the $3 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 17.

A good performance in the Caulfield Cup, a race Sargent has saddled up three starters in over the years, will lead the mare into the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) over the two miles at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday November 3.

Kirramosa has won four of her 13 career starts to date, her most notable victory being the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival of 2013.

She hasn’t won a race since her Oaks success, but impressed Sargent in her resuming run at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney last weekend on San Domenico Stakes Day.

The $843,000 earner kicked off her latest preparation in the $85,000 Fairfield RSL Club Handicap (1200m) on Saturday and put in an excellent first-up run when finishing off strongly to cross fifth only 1.4 lengths off the Ron Quinton-trained odds-on favourite Peeping.

Sargent told Racenet he was thrilled with the return where she carried 59kg to the winner’s 54.5kg and did lots of work late to make up ground in the closing stages.

“Very pleasing to see her hit the line as she did,” he said.

“She had been working strongly and I thought she trialled great but you still want to see them do it on race day.”

Next on the spring agenda for the mare is the $100,000 Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at Wyong on September 4, Wyong Gold Cup Day, which will hopefully lead into the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup runs later in the spring.

Current Caulfield Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have Kirramosa at $67 to win while she’s yet to be added into the futures Melbourne Cup betting markets for the ‘race that stops a nation’.
